PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The quartet of junior Jose Santana, freshmen Ben Sims and Kevin Dyer, and sophomore Tyler Davis continue to run well for the Army West Point men's track and field team. They neared their own school record in the 4x100 Meter Relay on the final day of the Penn Relays Saturday afternoon with a time of 40.53. That mark was good enough for fifth place in the event. Their best run was a 40.44 against Navy earlier this spring.
"We were conservative on our exchange zones and that hurt us a little today but the guys are running pretty fast right now," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "We will adjust for that as we move forward."
Another foursome had a strong performance to cap off the Penn Relays. Juniors Jack Monday and Trevor Touchton, freshman Ben Boswell, and sophomore Ryan Smathers finished in second place in the 4x800 meter relay. Their time of 7:32.40 was the second-fastest in the group of 25 teams.
"Monday ran a smart lead off leg and set the tone," stated Smith. "The other guys followed it up with some nice legs. On the whole, I think our people competed well this weekend and we are ready for the Patriot League Championships."
Sophomore Lee Bares finished tied for fifth in the pole vault (5.05 meters) while fellow sophomore Jack O'Brien added a season-best in the Javelin Throw. He reached 59.02 meters on his best throw, good enough for 13th in the event.
The Black Knights head to the Patriot League Championships hosted by Bucknell. It is a two-day event that will begin on Friday, May 6.
