Magarity Reaches 500th Career Win
February 03, 2016 | Women's Basketball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point head women's basketball coach Dave Magarity recorded his 500th career win as a head coach, with an 84-57 victory over Lafayette on Feb. 3. Now in his 10th year at Army and his 33rd overall, Magarity owns a career record of 500-441.
Â
In nine-plus seasons as head coach at Army, Magarity has a current record of 187-107, after posting a 313-334 mark in 23 seasons as a head men's basketball coach. Magarity previously served as head coach for 18 seasons at Marist, where he went 253-258, and began his head coaching career by going 60-76 over a five-year stint at St. Francis (Pa.).
Â
Magarity becomes the 54th active college basketball coach in the Division I ranks to reach the 500-wins mark, as 28 current coaches have achieved the feat on the women's side and 25 more have reached the plateau as a men's coach.
Â
Magarity is the all-time wins leader for both the Marist men's team and Army's women's program. He became the Black Knights' career wins leader after a 70-57 victory over Holy Cross on Jan. 15, 2014.
Â
"The fact that I was able to reach 500 this year was special to me," Magarity said. "Throughout my career, I've been blessed with some really great players, going back to my career at St. Francis (Pa.) and obviously my 18 years at Marist. These 10 years have been extra special to me. It's really nice to have done this with this class, because this has been, in my mind, the most special class I've coached."
