Bryant Knocks Off Baseball in Season Opener
February 19, 2016 | Baseball
CARY, N.C. – In the first-ever meeting between Bryant and Army on the diamond, the Bulldogs came away with a 6-1 victory in the season opener for both teams on Friday afternoon at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
Sophomore catcher Jon Rosoff led the Black Knights with a pair of base hits, while Kris Lindner, Ryan Levenhagen and Justin Reece each added singles. David Monge drove in Army's lone run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.
Bryant starting pitcher James Karinchak scattered four hits over 6.0 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and one walk to earn the win.
A leadoff walk to start the top of the third inning helped Bryant get on the board first against Army starting pitcher Jeremey Mortensen. Three batters later after a stolen base and two strikeouts, Cole Fabio singled to right field to break the ice.
Zach Wood, who scored Bryant's first run, delivered a two-run double with runners on the corners and two away in the top of the fourth inning. The Bulldogs led 3-0 after five innings as Mortensen was replaced at that point. The sophomore left hander struck out four and walked one and took the loss after allowing three earned runs on four hits.
Freshman Tyler Giovinco entered from the bullpen and threw a pair of scoreless frames before running into trouble in the eighth. Buck McCarthy started the inning with a homer to left and then Brandon Bingel worked a walk. Giovinco got the next two outs as Bingel advanced to second, before Dan Cellucci doubled and Joe Paparelli singled to push the lead to 6-0. Justin French got the final out of the eighth when Fabio lined out to end the inning.
Reece was on third with one down in the bottom half of the eighth following an infield single and scored on Monge's sac fly to left. Army was unable to score in the ninth as Justin Snyder was credited with the save after pitching the final three innings for the Bulldogs.
Stu Schley gave up one hit in a scoreless ninth inning out of the Army bullpen.
Army continues its weekend at the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Saturday afternoon when it plays a doubleheader against Penn State. First pitch in game one is set for 1:30 p.m.
