Army Wrestlers Climb in National Polls
November 08, 2016 | Wrestling
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Following a successful opening weekend at the Southeast Open, four Army West Point wrestlers are ranked in the national polls, which were announced Tuesday morning.
Senior captains Logan Everett and Russ Parsons, along with junior Andrew Mendel and sophomore Rocco Caywood all moved up in the rankings by InterMat, FloWrestling and The Open Mat.
Everett, who had what many believe to be the upset of the year so far with a 7-4 decision over then-fifth-ranked Joey Ward of North Carolina, entered each of the rankings this week. The 141-pounder from Tioga, Pa., enters the InterMat rankings at 17th, while being slated 13th by FloWrestling and 12th by The Open Mat.
Parsons went 5-0 en route to the 157-pound title in the open division and was the only Black Knight to defeat two ranked opponents on the day. That allowed him to enter the FloWrestling rankings at 11th, as well as jumping one spot in the InterMat poll to 14th and six spots in The Open Mat to 12th.
Caywood opened the season at No. 15 according to InterMat and The Open Mat. After defeating then-10th-ranked Scottie Boykin of UT-Chattanooga, 5-2, the sophomore 197-pounder climbed to 11th in the InterMat rankings and 10th in The Open Mat poll, while entering FloWrestling at 13th.
Mendel held steady in the final spot in The Open Mat's top-20 after earning a 19-2 technical fall over Old Dominion's Luke Drugac.
Army is set for its home-opener as fourth-ranked Penn State comes to Christl Arena on Friday for an 8 p.m. dual.
