Army West Point Athletics
Feature Friday: A Burning Passion
October 21, 2016 | Sprint Football, Women's Rugby
Feature Friday highlights the tremendous personal stories our coaches and cadet-athletes have to share on a weekly basis. Each Friday, a new feature story will be prominently highlighted on GoArmyWestPoint.com. The features will include multi-media pieces, as well as written stories by media outlets and the Army West Point athletic communications staff.
The fire knife dance was originally a pre-war ritual in which the Samoan warriors would twirl the war knife, known as a nifo oti, to psyche up the warriors. Since that time, the dance has now become a way for many Samoans to show strength and pride in their heritage. Junior Army West Point women's rugby player Taylor Jessop and sophomore sprint football player Keila Pritchard speak to their background in the dance and their ties to the culture they have brought with them to West Point.Â
