WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point rifle team competed for the first in over a month when hosting No. 3 Kentucky on Saturday morning and lost by an aggregate score of 4649-4597. The Black Knights, who entered ranked 10th in the latest CRCA rankings, were outscored 2295-2281 in smallbore and 2354-2316 in air rifle. The Wildcats continue their perfect season and are now 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the GARC while Army falls to 2-6 on the year and 1-4 in conference.
"There was some success but I think everybody knows we can do better," said head coach Web Wright. "Everybody can put it behind them, get their mind right, and have a good match against North Carolina State."
Army's top scorers among NCAA scoring participants came from senior Alyssa Gestl and freshman Nathan Brewer. Gestl scored an 1156 aggregate while Brewer totaled 1154 to take seventh and eighth overall, respectively.
The Black Knights had strong performances among some NCAA scorers. Junior Marvin Lewis was fourth in aggregate with an 1161. He placed fourth in smallbore with a 575 score and tied for sixth with Gestl and two Kentucky shooters in air rifle with score of 586.
Other Cadets posted personal-bests on the day. Freshman Rick Arnold's 581 in air rifle was his career-best, sophomore Sarah Nakata's 579 in air rifle was a new career-high, and junior Allen Solida, who counted in the NCAA scoring for smallbore but not air rifle, shot a tied his season-best in the latter with a 584.
"It's kind of a crapshoot," said Wright on selecting his line-up each match. "We have seven or eight (cadets) who could shoot one of the better scores it's just up to me to kind of predict that."
For Kentucky, Hanna Carr paced all participants with an 1170 aggregate score and was the only competitor with a smallbore score over 580 finishing with 582. Heather Kirby took medalist honors in air rifle with a 592.
The Black Knights next match comes on Monday morning against North Carolina State. The meet, originally scheduled for 9 a.m., is now at 8 a.m. The Wolfpack are currently 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the GARC. They finish the Wildcats Sunday morning in West Point, N.Y.
