Gymnastics Takes Second at West Point Open

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point gymnastics team took second at the 25th Annual West Point Open Friday night, led by a third place finish from plebe Cole Casanova in the all-around.
Casanova earned a score of 82.200 to earn third in just his second collegiate meet. Three-time all-around champion Jesse Glenn elected to sit out of the all-around, not competing on still rings.
Army opened the night on parallel bars, earning a team score of 70.150, the fifth best mark on parallel bars in program history. Glenn paced the team with a score of 14.400, tying for sixth. Nathan Goff tied for 10th with a score of 14.250 and Sam Kusnitz tied for 13th with a mark of 14.000.
Moving to high bar, the Black Knights were stellar, as Glenn and Leo Genders tied for second with scores of 14.500. Goff's score of 14.200 was good enough to tie for sixth, while Seth Cannon earned a score of 13.650 to take 15th. As a team, Army earned a score of 70.450 on high bar, second only to Penn State.
The Black Knights then took to floor, earning a mark of 71.650 to capture second. Kusnitz's score of 14.700 led the way for Army and placed second overall. Glenn wasn't far behind with a score of 14.650 to tie for third. Casanova placed eighth with a score of 14.250 and Cannon took 12th with a score of 14.050.
As a team, Army struggled on pommel horse with a score of 64.550. Andre Hufnagel led the way with a score of 13.750 to place sixth, followed by Goff's 13.700. Elijah-Ty Phelps earned a score of 13.000.
Scores of 13.850 from both Ryan Wilson and Herman led the way on still rings as Army competed to a team total of 67.050. Casanova added a mark of 13.800 and Goff earned a 13.300.
The Black Knights rebounded to close the night on vault, earning a score of 72.500, the sixth best mark in program history. Trailing service academy rival Navy heading into the final rotation, Army wowed the crowd of 1,113 led by a score of 14.700 from Glenn. Casanova and Genders each scored a 14.350, while Wilson added a career record 14.600.
The individual event finals will follow tomorrow at 7 p.m. from Christl Arena.
