Gabow Captains Womens Cross Country in Maine
September 05, 2015 | Women's Cross Country
FINAL RESULTS
ORONO, MAINE – Army West Point women's cross country senior captain Lindsay Gabow handily captured the top-spot at the University of Maine, helping the Black Knights open the season with a win on Saturday.
The Pelham, N.Y.-native continued where she left off in 2014; at the front of the pack. She cruised through the five kilometer in 18:39.2, more than 20 seconds faster than any other runner and more than a minute faster than any opponent. The win was the first for the Black Knights' director of track and field and cross country Mike Smith since he began in 2014.
"I thought our women ran pretty well," said Smith. "I expected that Lindsay (Gabow) would go to the front, and it worked out that she was able to win the race handily."
The plebes, however, really showed that they are up to the task of competing at this level as three of them placed in the top-six with two in the top-three. Abby Halbrook started her career with a second-place finish, crossing the finish line at 18:59.9. She was followed by Cassie Mundekis in third with a time of 19:33.6.
"You never know how young runners will compete relative to how they train," said Smith, "and today was a nice indication of the competitive levels of our plebes. Our success this year will depend on how they adapt, and today was a good start. I think we have a good, young group. Abby (Halbrook) has been running well in practice, and Cassie (Mundekis) has shown some nice potential so I was encouraged by the way those two worked together early on. We also had a nice run from Sarah Jeon as our number four."
Jeon finished sixth, completing the race in 20:19.1.
Army returns to action on Friday, Sept. 11, when the Black Knights travel to Van Cortland Park in Brooklyn, N.Y., for the BR Jasper Invitational. The women's race will begin at 2:30 p.m.
