Late Goals Send Holy Cross Past Women’s Soccer
September 30, 2015 | Women's Soccer
WORCESTER, Mass. – Annie Galvin scored twice in the final 12 minutes to lift Holy Cross to a 2-1 victory over the Army West Point women's soccer team on Wednesday evening at Smith Stadium.
Galvin's first goal tied the score at 1-1 in the 78th minute and she netted the game winner with 24 seconds to play. Maggie Carey sent a long ball toward Andj Seslija at the top of the 18-yard box where she flicked the pass over the Army defense. Galvin ran onto the bouncing ball and chipped it past Army goalie Jordan Cassalia.
The result drops Army to 3-7-1 overall and 1-1-1 in Patriot League play, while Holy Cross improved to 4-5-2 and 1-1-1 in the conference.
The Black Knights outshot Holy Cross 16-10 and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Moments after entering the match as a substitute in the 15th minute, Candace Stewart received a pass from Clare Shea and her right-footed shot was forced over the crossbar by Holy Cross goalie Brooke Holle. She finished with eight saves in the match.
Two minutes after Stewart's chance, Army broke the ice with a set piece. Katie Holder delivered a medium distance corner on the ground toward the top of the box for Shea, where she one-timed a shot on goal. Holle tried to come out and corral the floating shot, but she stumbled and the ball snuck inside the near post as Shea's first goal of the year put Army in front.
The Black Knights took the 1-0 advantage into halftime and their back line of Pam Wishart, Brooke Richardson, Hanna Rozzi and Sydney Witham held the Crusaders without a shot on goal in the period.
Early in the second half, Holder stole the ball near the end line just outside the Holy Cross penalty area. She fired a sharp angle attempt that drilled the crossbar as the Army lead remained at one.
Holy Cross' first chance of the night came in the 54th minute when Aly Spencer freed herself from an Army defender by turning a pass from the right side into a shot on goal. Spencer's strike was turned away by a diving Cassalia and cleared away from danger.
Two minutes later, Galvin got in behind the Black Knights' defense but Cassalia came off her line to cut down the angle and made her second of four saves.
Army countered when Shea fired a curling shot toward the upper corner of Holle's goal, but she was up to the challenge and knocked it over for a corner in the 63rd minute.
With 20 minutes to play, Stewart had a right-footed shot snared by Holle at the near post as the score remained 1-0 in favor of the visitors. A minute later, Cassalia grabbed a left-footed attempt by Kara Shaw on the other end.
Spencer played a through ball between the Army defense at midfield and where Stephanie Lund ran onto it. Two touches for Lund brought Cassalia out to challenge and she played the ball across to Galvin for an open-net score that tied the match at 1-1 with 12 minutes to go in regulation.
Holder and Kayleigh Stallings each had shots from outside the penalty area smothered by Holle, before Galvin's winning tally.
Army returns home on Saturday night when it hosts Lehigh. Kickoff from Clinton Field is set for 7 p.m. and the match can be seen on the Patriot League Network.
Game Notes: Madison McGinn made her first-career start for the Black Knights … Army leads the all-time series with Holy Cross 18-6-4 … Holder has recorded a point in all three Patriot League matches this year … Shea now has three goals for her career.
