September 20, 2015 | Women's Soccer
NEW YORK CITY – The Army West Point women's soccer team scored early, but Columbia came from behind to earn a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
Less than a minute into the match, Army (2-6-1) earned a corner kick and took advantage of the early set piece. Bailey Widman took the corner and bent a curling ball into the goal behind Columbia keeper Allison Spencer. Officially the goal was scored 0:40 into the contest.
The Lions (4-3-0) countered in the 17th minute when Rachel Alexander freed herself from a defender and fired a shot past Kimberly Comstock to even the score at a goal apiece.
The Black Knights outshout the Lions 10-4 in the first 45 minutes and forced Spencer to make five saves in the period. Army also had a 4-0 edge in corner kicks with Widman and Katie Holder each taking two shots.
After halftime, the play was more even as each team had a pair of corner kicks in the first 25 minutes. Columbia forced Comstock to make two saves and new Lions' goalkeeper Gabby Dubick turned away a Madison McGinn shot in the 54th minute.
Columbia broke the deadlock in the 73rd when Emma Anderson took a feed from Natalie Ambrose on the left side and let a shot fly from just outside of the Army penalty area that found the back of the net. It was Anderson's second goal of the season.
Army was able to earn a corner kick late in regulation, but Sam Gottlieb's shot was blocked and the Lions held on for the 2-1 win.
Patriot League play resumes next Saturday, Sept. 26 when the Black Knights travel to Easton, Pa., to play Lafayette. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the contest can be seen live on the Patriot League Network.
Game Notes: The quickest goal in program history belongs to Michelle Meier, who scored 0:27 into a match against Carleton on Sept. 16, 1991 … Army leads the all-time series with Columbia 14-8-0 … Comstock made her second start of the season in goal for the Black Knights.
