Men's Tennis Edges Lafayette to Advance in PL Tournament

CAMP HILL, Pa. -- The top-seeded Army West Point men's tennis team defeated eighth-seeded Lafayette, 4-0, during a Patriot League quarterfinal match on Friday afternoon at the Camp Hill Tennis Club.
The Black Knights improve to 17-8 and advance to Saturday's semifinal round, while the Leopards finish the season 7-12.
Army West Point took two doubles matches to claim the doubles point, while the third match went unfinished. The Black Knights' top pairing of senior Alex Van Velzer and sophomore Sam Lampman played to an 8-2 victory over Lafayette's Brandon Goldstein and Brian Stefanowicz, while senior Peter Sienko and freshman Michael Nguyen collected an 8-1 win in the No. 3 doubles match.
Van Velzer was joined by sophomores Grant Riechmann and Kyle Barnes in earning singles victories for Army West Point. Van Velzer surrendered just one game during a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jake Lazer at No. 2 singles, while Riechmann posted a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Brian Pinkard at No. 3.
Barnes registered a 6-3, 6-4 win versus Stefanowicz in the No. 4 singles match, as Army West Point completed the sweep in its opening match of the Patriot League Tournament.
The Black Knights will face either fourth-seeded Colgate or fifth-seeded Bucknell in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals set for Saturday at 11 a.m.
