Lehigh Downs Baseball in Game Three
March 29, 2015 | Baseball
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lehigh broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the sixth inning en route to a 5-2 victory over the Army baseball team in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Depew Field. Junior catcher Ben Smith drove in both runs for the Black Knights in the losing effort.
Lehigh earned its first Patriot League victory of the year and moved to 5-15 overall, while Army dipped to 12-10 and 2-1 in the conference.
Lehigh starting pitcher Peter Moore sent the Black Knights down in order in the top of the first before Lehigh took its first lead of the series in the bottom half of the inning. A leadoff walk and an error put leadoff man Justin Pacchioli at third base with nobody out for Jacen Nalesnik, who grounded out to shortstop for the game's first run.
Army left-hander Julian Larimer settled in from that point on and struck out four of the next six hitters he faced before retiring the side in order in the third after Army went ahead.
The Black Knights had Brandon Lee and Harold Earls in scoring position with one out in the top of the third inning when catcher Ben Smith dropped a double into left field to bring home two. Moore limited the damage there by stranding Smith at second base, but Army had the lead after three full innings.
The score held until the bottom of the fifth inning when Lehigh's John Elson began the frame with a leadoff double to left field. Pacchioli followed with a single that tied the game at 2-2, prior to a double play and a groundout that ended Lehigh's threat.
The Mountain Hawks took the lead for good with three runs on two hits and capitalized on an Army error in the bottom of the sixth. Lehigh loaded the bases with one out, before Larimer walked Faust to make it a 3-2 game. Elson was up next and he singled through the hole on the right side, bringing home two more Lehigh runs.
Larimer was saddled with the loss after giving up three earned runs on seven hits. He fanned five, walked two and hit two others.
David Young sealed the win by striking out two Army batters in the top of the seventh as Lehigh came away with the 5-2 victory. He pitched 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen after Moore's 5.1 inning start. Moore struck out three, allowed two earned runs on four hits and walked one in a no-decision.
