This Week in Army Athletics
February 06, 2015 | General
Feb. 6, 2015
During the previous week, we saw women's basketball win three Patriot League contests to extend its winning streak to seven games and they are in the hunt for the top seed going into the final month of the regular season. Football has announced a couple of changes to its 2015 schedule, while men's basketball honored three former standouts by retiring their jerseys.
A reminder to fans that we are hosting a pair of Army-Navy Star Series matches this weekend with track and field and rifle taking on the Midshipmen here at West Point. Be sure to come out and support our cadet-athletes on Saturday. The rifle team kicks off the day with its 9 a.m. match at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center, while the track meet starts with the women at 11 a.m., followed by the men at 3 p.m. at Gillis Field House.
The women's hoops squad has climbed the Patriot League standings with three more wins and sits alone in second place with an 8-3 mark after defeating Lehigh Wednesday night at Christl Arena to break the tie for the second spot. We sit one game behind American in the standings and still have one more game against the Eagles this season. Cow Kelsey Minato scored a game-high 23 points on 8-of-18 shooting and grabbed five rebounds for Army against the Mountain Hawks. Firstie Olivia Schretzman posted her fourth double-double of the year with a season-high 19 points and 11 boards. Cow Jean Parker nearly reached a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Next up for us is the Navy Star Game on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with men's hoops.
There have been a couple of updates to our 2015 football season. The home opener against Fordham will kick off at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4, at Michie Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 5. Also the game against Rutgers on Nov. 21 at Yankee Stadium has been shifted to Michie Stadium with the start time to be announced at a later date. We have renewed our deal with CBS and all home games will be live on CBS Sports Network next season.
The men's basketball team hosted Loyola on Saturday and we honored Army Hall of Famers Kevin Houston (USMA '87), the late Mike Silliman (USMA '66) and Gary Winton (USMA '78) as they had their jerseys retired during a ceremony at halftime. We were happy to honor them as the first three men's players to have their numbers retired and we want to extend a thank you to those who attended the luncheon prior to the game on Saturday.
Hockey earned a league win on the road Friday night against RIT in the middle of a stretch of three games in four days last week. Plebe Cole Bruns made 33 saves, including 26 in the final two periods to help us hang onto a one-goal lead until cow Joe Kozlak recorded an empty net goal to seal the win late in the game. Kozlak finished the game with three points on a goal and two assists, which was a career high. Firstie Maurice Alvarez had two points on a goal and an assist.
Lacrosse season kicks off this weekend at UMass on Saturday and then we open at home against VMI on Monday afternoon. Single-game tickets are currently on sale at the ticket office, so make sure to pick up yours today and watch our teams take on the likes of Loyola and Notre Dame. Men's basketball is home for two in a row after the Navy doubleheader on Saturday.
Tickets are still available for games against Holy Cross (Feb. 11) and Bucknell (Feb. 15). For tickets, visit www.goARMYsports.com/tickets, call 1-877-TIX-ARMY or stop by the Army Ticket Office located at Gate 3 of Michie Stadium.
