Army Athletics had another Star victory last weekend as gymnastics beat Navy at West Point. Women’s basketball won its 11th consecutive Patriot League contest to remain second in the standings with the regular season winding down. Spring sports continued competitions as baseball opened in South Carolina with two wins, while men’s lacrosse improved to 3-0 with a win over Jacksonville.
Another winter Star match with Navy came to an end at Gross Athletic Center as the gymnastics squad defeated the Mids, 421.600-414.550, on Saturday. Gymnastics earned three wins over Navy at multiple meets and recorded a Star win for the first time since 2013. Our point total was the highest of the season, besting our previous high of 416.150 against Penn State in the season opener. We earned four of six individual event victories, with first place finishes in floor exercise, pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar. Cow Jesse Glenn captured the all-around title with a season-best mark of 86.800 and he claimed two individual event victories, taking first on both parallel bars and high bar.
The women’s hoops team continues to be on a roll and remained in second place in the Patriot League with its 11th consecutive win on Wednesday at home against Colgate. We showed poise in the final minutes and cow Kelsey Minato’s three-pointer with 1:15 left gave us the 48-47 win. Last Saturday, we needed to come back opposite Bucknell as we were down 10 in the second half, but overtook the Bison in the final minutes to earn a 50-46 win. We improved to 20-5 overall and 12-3 in the conference after the two wins and stand one game behind first-place American (13-2) and three games ahead of Lehigh and Navy, which are both 9-6 in league play. Minato led all scorers in both games with 22 points against the Bison, followed by 18 versus Colgate. We will look to tie its program record of 12-straight as it closes the regular season at league-leading American at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The men’s lacrosse team jumped up to 11th in the nation in the USILA Coaches Poll and is off to their first 3-0 start since 2007 after getting a lopsided 20-4 win at Jacksonville University. We scored eight of the first nine goals of the game and shut out the Dolphins in the second half. It was the second straight game we had scored 20 goals after beating VMI at home on Feb. 9 by a 24-3 score. Yearling Cole Johnson led the way with five points on four goals and an assist, while cow Connor Cook chipped in with four goals for the second consecutive contest. Firstie John Glesener recorded four points with two goals and two assists and extended his point-scoring streak to 31 games. We have a big test this coming Sunday at fourth-ranked Syracuse.
In its first action of the season, the baseball team went 2-1 down in Spartansburg, S.C., with wins over Dayton and USC Upstate. We faced two separate deficits in the game, but a five-run seventh inning propelled us over the top to a 12-6 win against the Flyers on Saturday. We knocked out 15 hits and were led by yearling Kris Lindner, who went 4-for-5 at the plate and drove in three runs. Plebe Jon Rosoff and firstie Mark McCants each added three hits in the win. Later in the day, the offense was alive again for an 11-9 win over USC Upstate. Lindner provided more power with a bases-clearing triple as part of a five-run third inning. After giving up the lead in the fourth, we responded with three more runs in the fifth before eventually outlasting the Spartans by the two-run difference.
Join us on Sunday for another Star match, which will come from Christl Arena as Wrestling takes on Navy at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are still available for the men’s basketball game against American on Sunday. The hockey team is back after three weeks away from Tate Rink. They have a two-game series against Bentley and tickets are on sale now.
