Rifle Falls to No. 3 West Virginia
November 14, 2015 | Rifle
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Army West Point rifle team traveled to face West Virginia on Saturday morning and lost 4709-4653. The three-time defending NCAA champions and third-ranked Mountaineers swept the ninth-ranked Black Knights with a 2346-2317 advantage in smallbore and 2363-2336 win in air rifle. Army falls to 1-4 on the season and 1-3 in the GARC while West Virginia remains undefeated at 6-0 and 4-0 in conference.
"(West Virginia) is a great team and shot really well," said Army coach Web Wright. "But we continue to close the gap as the weeks go on. We will get there over time."
Freshman Nathan Brewer, following a strong showing at the President's Trophy Match last weekend, paced the Black Knights with an 1167 aggregate score and tied the team-high with a 582 smallbore score. Junior Danielle Cuomo also scored a 582 in smallbore.
"Nathan had a perfect prone score, which is always good to see," stated Wright. "There were a couple good standing performances but kneeling is a little low. We gave away too many points and we are getting to the level where every point counts."
Senior Alyssa Gestl placed sixth in air rifle in the match with a 588 score. It was the third time this season the senior scored at least 588 in air rifle as she had a season-high 590 last weekend.
The Mountaineers swept the top five spots in both smallbore and air rifle while taking the top eight spots in aggregate scoring. Ginny Thrasher had the best aggregate score (1181) and was tops in air rifle (593). Eight-time All-American Garrett Spurgeon had the top smallbore score (589) and earned runner-up honors in aggregate (1176).
Army returns home next Sunday as No. 2 TCU comes to town. It is just the Black Knights second home match of the season. The Horned Frogs visit Ohio State tomorrow but are currently 6-0.
