November 13, 2015 | Women's Rugby
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's rugby team capped the regular season with an impressive 62-15 victory over service academy rival Navy under the lights at Anderson Rugby Complex.
The win is the Black Knights' second consecutive victory over a service academy as they earned a 43-0 win over Air Force last weekend. Army honored eight members of the class of 2016. The Black Knights played tribute to Mariah Caid-Loos, Marissa Caid-Loos, Lindy Clark, Allie McDonald, Chioma Odocha, Carissa Pekny and Kaeleigh Warfield. In addition, Army honored manager Hannah Jones and junior Tranelle Patterson, who is competing in her final season of eligibility.
Navy got scoring underway in the first minute, converting a penalty kick to take the 3-0 lead. Army responded in the seventh minute as Mackenzie Garner dotted down to put Army up 5-3.
The Midshipmen got back on top just seven minutes later with a try, but Army took control from that point forward, never again surrendering the lead.
In the 19th minute, Clark dotted down as Nicole Heavirland successfully booted the conversion to put Army up 12-8. Just three minutes later, Marissa Caid-Loos would score down the far corner of the try zone, with Heavirland again converting the score to put Army on top 19-8.
Heavirland scored her first of three tries in the 27th minute, adding the kick to give the Black Knights the 24-8 advantage.
After being held off of the board for more than 20 minutes, Navy dotted down in the 35th minute, successfully booting the kick to cut the Black Knights' lead to 26-15.
Army would close out the half with a burst of momentum as vice-captain Odocha would score to send Army into the break with the 31-15 lead.
Heavirland kept the pressure on in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring in the 44th minute, adding her fourth conversion of the evening. Just two minutes later, Pekny dotted down, putting Army up 43-15.
Tranelle Patterson would score in the 54th minute with Zye Crittington dotting down in the 66th to put the Black Knights on top 55-15. Heavirland concluded the scoring in the 78th minute with a try and successful conversion to send Army to the 62-15 win.
With the victory, Army concludes the regular season with a record of 7-4, undefeated against its service academy rivals.
The Black Knights will get playoff action underway on Sunday as they host the first round of the National Collegiate Women's Varsity Rugby Association (NCWVRA) Championships. Seeded second in the Northeast Conference, the Black Knights will face the Ivy League's No. 3 Harvard. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. ET from Anderson Rugby Complex.
A win would advance Army into the semifinals, where it would face the winner of Ivy No. 1 Dartmouth and Northeast No. 4 Norwich. That match would take place on Friday, Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. with the final to follow on Nov. 21 at 1 p.m.
