CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Army West Point rifle team posted its second highest score of the season in air rifle, but it was not enough to overcome a strong performance in that discipline by Great America Rifle Conference rival Nebraska as the Black Knights suffered a 4663-4616 defeat in a match hosted by The Citadel at the Inoyue Marksmanship Center.
Seventh-ranked Nebraska (3-3, 3-1 GARC) outpointed the No. 12 Black Knights (1-3, 1-2 GARC) 2300-2280 in smallbore, and 2363-2336 in air rifle.
"We had a solid team performance in air rifle again," noted head Army coach Web Wright. "I am happy with our consistency in that discipline, but smallbore continues to plague us.
Senior Alyssa Gestl placed third in smallbore with a 575, three points behind the runner-up spot, and junior Danielle Cuomo was the team's leader in air rifle with a 587. Gestl turned in her second highest score of the season in smallbore, and Cuomo tied her season high in air rifle (587) for the second straight week, which is two shy of her personal best.
All four scoring members on Army's smallbore unit finished among the top eight. Joining Gestl were junior team captain Allen Solida, who tied for fourth after firing his second highest score of the season (572), followed by classmate Marvin Lewis (567) and plebe Nathan Brewer (566). Nebraska grabbed medalist and runner-up honors as three were among the top four spots.
Lewis' 585 in air rifle was two points behind Cuomo for Army's second highest of the meet to tie his season best with Gestl firing a 584 and Brewer adding a 580 in combining for a 2336, six points off the team's season high. Nebraska's Hannah Virga's 597 earned medalist honors.
Freshman Rick Arnold, competing in his first collegiate match, fired a 566 mark in smallbore and 558 score in air rifle. He was one of two plebes on the trip, joining Brewer who has been on the traveling squad for all four matches.
Army, closing out a four-match road trip, makes its home debut Saturday when it steps out of match competition to host the annual President's Trophy Match where the Black Knights will be joined by Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard. Army will be in the hunt for its second crown in three years after winning it in 2013-14, then finishing runner-up to Air Force last year.
