Men's Cross Country Places 3rd at Patriot Leagues
October 31, 2015 | Men's Cross Country
HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Army West Point men's cross country team took the course at Colgate University on Saturday morning for the Patriot League Championships and finished third with a score of 91 points.
Navy won the overall team title with 19 points as they placed in the top four spots on the 8K course. Boston University ended up second at 88 points. The Black Knights finished four points ahead of Lehigh, who took fourth. Army had an average time of 25:35.
"I thought we ran as well as we could today," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "We were only a few points from second, which was something that we thought was possible coming into this race. This course is on top of a mountain and the hills changed the way teams approached the race."
Sophomore Nick Causey was Army's top individual finisher at the 10th spot, earning 2nd-Team All-Patriot League honors. He ran the course in 25:22 with an average mile time of 5:06.2.
"Nick Causey ran the best race of his young career, and that really carried us. His previous best performance was as our 4th man at the dual with Navy two weeks ago. He is really starting to figure things out, and I am proud of his effort."
He was followed by junior Jacob Fong, who finished 18th with a time of 25:34.9. Senior captain Tom Girardot edged out sophomore Johnny Valeri by 0.6 seconds to take the 20th-place finish at 25:36.3. Valeri beat Lehigh's Sean Burke by a hair as the two finished with the same time.
The No. 4 runner for the Black Knights was senior Drew Beck who completed the course in 25:48.0. He was trailed by junior Brown Bailey who came in 31st with a time of 25:51.5.
Army will return to action when the team heads back to Boston for the NCAA Regional meet on Friday, Nov. 13.
