Early Loyola Goal Downs Women’s Soccer
October 17, 2015 | Women's Soccer
BALTIMORE – A first-half goal by Loyola Maryland's Rosy Hayes proved to be the difference as the Army West Point women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the Greyhounds on Saturday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.
The result vaults Loyola (5-7-1, 3-2-1 Patriot) past Army in the Patriot League standings into a tie for third with 10 points. The Black Knights currently occupy the fifth spot with eight points and a 2-2-2 conference mark. Overall, Army is 4-9-2 on the season.
A run from the left side toward the center of the field by Loyola's Charlotte Miller helped set up the Hayes goal. Miller cut inside before sending a through ball between two Army defenders that Hayes ran onto at the top of the Black Knights' penalty area. She took one touch with her right foot before slotting home a left-footed shot inside the near post. Hayes' seventh goal of 2015 officially went into the scores sheet at 10:52.
Less than three minutes later, Katie Holder earned and took a corner kick that gave the Black Knights an excellent chance to level the score. Holder's corner was served toward the far post for Clare Shea where she directed it toward the near post, but Loyola goalie Colleen Folen was there to smother the opportunity.
Each team registered three shots in the first half, with both goalkeepers making one save.
Twenty minutes into the second half, Samantha Sullenger sent a pass wide for Bailey Widman on the left side. Widman made a couple of moves to free herself for a cross to the far corner of Loyola's six-yard box, but Holder's header missed the goal frame.
With less than 10 minutes to go, Folen came off her line to preserve the lead for Loyola as a long ball in Holder's direction nearly gave the Black Knights a chance to tie the game. The Loyola keeper cleared the ball from danger with her right foot as Holder converged on the bouncing ball outside the penalty area.
Loyola earned a penalty kick with less than four minutes to play and had a chance to add an insurance goal. Miller stepped to the spot and sent a shot to Army goalie Jordan Cassalia's right, but she read the shot correctly and dove to the right to make the save. Cassalia finished with two stops for Army.
The Greyhounds were able to hold onto their lead during the final minutes and left with a 1-0 win.
Patriot League play continues on Wednesday night for the Black Knights when they host Colgate at Clinton Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the match can be seen on the Patriot League Network.
Game Notes: Loyola evened the all-time series with Army at 1-1-1 with its first victory.
