Rifle Edges Akron, 4609-4592, In GARC Match
January 31, 2015 | Rifle
PALMYRA, Pa. - Sophomore Allen Solida posted match honors in smallbore (578) and classmates Danielle Cuomo and Elizabeth Mostert were Army's top shooter in air rifle (582) as the No. 12 Black Knights edged No. 13 Akron, 4609-4592, in a Great America Rifle Conference and NRA Sectional match Saturday at the Palmyra Sportsmen Club.
Army's domination in smallbore proved the margin of difference in the meet as the Black Knights (5-6, 3-3 GARC) outpointed the Zips 2293-2271 to head into the air rifle portion of the match holding a 22-point lead.
Solida edged Akron's Matt Chezem by a point for medalist honors in smallbore firing a season-high 578. Joining him on Army's four-man scoring unit were Cuomo and plebe Josh Martin, who tied for third-place honors with 572s, along with a 571 by junior Alyssa Gestl as Army swept five of the top six places. Mostert also posted a 572 competing individually.
Akron nipped Army by five points in air rifle (2321-2316), but it wasn't enough to overcome the Black Knights' lead in falling to 2-4 in the GARC. Cuomo and Mostert tied for third-place honors with identical 582s, two shy of second and five off the winner, with Martin placing fifth with a 580.
"It is a nice win, but it was too close for comfort," said assistant coach Rick Johnson. "We have been shooting well lately in the air gun, but that escaped us today."
The Black Knights, who snapped a two-match losing streak, will look to expand on Saturday's success when they host arch-rival Feb. 7 in the annual Star match at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.
