Minato, Army Shoot Past Boston University
January 29, 2015 | Women's Basketball
Army picks up its fifth consecutive win to match its longest winning streak of the season and improve to 14-5 overall and 6-3 in the league, while Boston University drops to 4-16 and 1-8.
Minato finished 9-of-13 from the floor and shot 8-of-10 from beyond the arc to move past classmate Jean Parker's previous single-game standard of seven three-pointers against Central Connecticut State on Dec. 13. Freshman Daizjah Morris also scored in double figures with 10 points, while sophomore Dani Failor added six points and six rebounds off the bench.
Boston University senior Mollie McKendrick led the Terriers with 10 points, while sophomore Meghan Green and freshman Kara Shefitc each chipped in eight.
Both teams opened up to a 5-5 tie before three-pointers on consecutive possessions, from Morris and Minato, respectively, ignited an 11-2 Army run that gave the visitors a 16-7 lead with 10:27 remaining in the first half.
Junior Clodagh Scannell hit a three 19 seconds later to bring Boston University back to within six points before the Black Knights went off on a 19-5 run over the final 8:10 of the period. Minato scored 11 points during the stretch and shot 4-of-5 from the floor, while Morris added a pair of three-pointers and sophomore Dani Failor hit a jumper to give Army a 35-15 lead entering the half.
The Black Knights began the second half by outscoring the Terriers, 9-2, to bolster their advantage to 27 points, 44-17. Boston University cut into the lead with an 8-0 run during a 4:53 span to bring its deficit to 19 points, 44-25, before Minato quieted the scoring spurt with her program-record-setting eighth three-pointer of the evening with 10:03 on the clock.
Boston University cut its deficit to 18 points with a 10-6 run over the ensuing 4:07, but wouldn't come any closer as Army closed the contest on a 12-5 stretch that included scoring contributions from four different players.
The Black Knights play their second game in three days when they face Loyola on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m. in Baltimore, Md.
