Jan. 23, 2015 We had a full slate of games and events over the weekend as gymnastics hosted the annual West Point Open, while swimming and diving earned wins over their Patriot League counterparts and both basketball teams earned sweeps of Colgate on Wednesday night.
Off the court, the women’s basketball team made an announcement on Sunday that it has welcomed Andrea Wojciechowski as its newest member of the squad. She joins the program as part of the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, an organization that serves children and their families who are battling life-threatening diseases. Andrea, 12, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia over a year ago and was active in basketball, gymnastics, dance, cheerleading and Girl Scouts, prior to her diagnosis.
Wojciechowski brought some luck as the women downed Colgate, 64-62, to win their third-straight in league play. Kelsey Minato sank the winning bucket with four seconds left in the game for two of her 28 points on the night. Olivia Schretzman put in 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. Last Sunday, Minato became the all-time leader in Patriot League history with 65-straight double-digit games with 25 points against Bucknell in a 67-45 victory.
The men’s hoops squad got a huge 65-63 win on Wednesday night against league-leading Colgate. Tanner Plomb sunk a three-pointer with 16 seconds left to give us a 61-60 lead and then the Raiders were called for an offensive foul on the ensuing possession. Kyle Wilson then hit two free throws for two of his 15 points to cement the win. Plomb recorded 18 points and led us in points for the third-straight contest.
The men’s gymnastics team welcomed four squads to Christl Arena for the 24th Annual West Point Open. We finished second overall with 416.150 points and Penn State claimed the title with 439.400. Navy took third place with 409.200. Leading the way for us was cow Jesse Glenn, who won his third straight all-around title, scoring 84.550 points. Six of our cadet-athletes competed in the individual finals on Saturday night and all five recorded top five finishes. Firstie Connor Venrick earned the highest place in the individual events with a third-place finish on the pummel horse.
Swimming and diving squads hosted Colgate and Lafayette on Saturday at Crandall Pool and both the men and women swept the Raiders and Leopards. The men’s squad downed Colgate, 195-95, and then dropped Lafayette, 193-97. We earned eight first-place victories, including firstie Josh Urnezis putting together a career-best performance in the 1-meter. He just missed the Academy record in the event with a score of 333.30 and took the top spot in the 3-meter at 316.50. The men’s hockey team renews its international rivalry on Saturday against the Royal Military College.
