Men's Rugby Blog: Meet the Firsties
September 17, 2014 | Men's Rugby
Army Rugby Fans,
The team experienced a great weekend at Cornell returning to West Point with a 49-0 A side win and 114-0 B side victory. The team met Saturday morning at 0530 for formation at CGR. Following formation, we loaded the busses with our equipment and gear. After several hours on the road, we pulled off and ate breakfast at Cracker Barrel. Coach Mahan knows the guys enjoy CB and the added benefit of being able to browse the country store. As we entered Ithaca, a steady rain was falling which seems to be a recurring theme this year thus far.
Along with the rain, it turns out that winter has come early in upstate New York. Exiting the buses, the team was shocked by the chilly temperature, and while some were more prepared than others, after warm ups everyone was ready to get after it.
With the sloppy conditions coupled with early season jitters, the game got off to a slow start but as the match progressed the Brothers began to start putting phases together and dotting the ball between the posts. Impressive performances by plebe fly-half Thomas Del Pino and plebe winger David Huff helped the team pull away from the Big Red. The team is excited to watch the film and improve on our mistakes as we welcome the Penn State Nittany Lions to ARC next Saturday at 1300.
Following the A-side match, the “Killer Bs” took the pitch and dominated from start to finish. It was great to see some of the younger players get their first game experience. They responded well and really impressed with their desire to hit and play extremely physical.
The team enjoyed the victories but minds quickly shifted to recovery and preparation for Penn State, a Rugby East conference opponent.
In an attempt for you to get to know my firstie classmates, I asked four of them several questions about their West Point experience and the future:
Firstie most likely to be a General and why?
David Evans: Greg Walker. Look at his smile and you’ll have no choice but to make him a general.
Nick Satwicz: David Evans because of his charisma.
Dan Myers: David Evans because when he is bald he will bear a striking resemblance to GEN Odierno.
Tyler Glasz: Logan
Firstie most likely to return to West Point and teach and why?
Evans: Dan Myers. He seems to really enjoy his major and I would want him to be my teacher.
Satwicz: Matt Kaiser because he loves it so much.
Myers: Cody Brown and he will teach MS100.
Glasz: Dan Myers, so he can come back and help all of the struggling civil majors
Favorite moment of your rugby career?
Evans: Winning the Poseidon Cup. The tournament was a lot of fun. We had great weather and it was great experience for the newer players.
Satwicz: Plebe year when Will Holder won the game against Navy with a last second kick.
Myers: Finding our team cricket bug with Ethan Moorman.
Glasz: Will Holder consistently beating Navy with a late penalty kick.
Pick a Firstie and then match him with an underclassmen who he most resembles/ acts like.
Evans: Nick Satwicz and Logan Weiland. Both currently have the same haircut.
Satwicz: Ben Foley and John Sproul are both tall, lanky and awkward. It’s great.
Myers: Cam Hargis and Tyler Glasz
Glasz: Dan Myers = Luke "Fake Dan" Heun
What are you going to miss most after you finish playing Army rugby?
Evans: I am going to miss constantly being surrounded by my brothers
Satwicz: Brotherhood
Myers: I’m going to miss spending every day with my Brothers.
Glasz: Everyday interaction with the brothers
I hope you all enjoyed reading and will come support the team as we take the pitch Saturday at 1300. The team is putting in a hard week of practice and will be ready to battle for 80 minutes.
My Jets,
Collum
