August 31, 2014 | Women's Soccer
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Junior Hanna Rozzi scored just 26 seconds into the second half to cut host Davidson's 2-0 halftime lead in half, but the Wildcats answered with a goal en route to posting a 3-1 win over Army in a non-conference women's soccer match Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
Davidson (2-2-0) took a 2-0 halftime lead into the locker room after scoring a pair of late goals over a three-minute span. Stephanie Piperno put the `Cats up 1-0 when she scored in the 42nd minute and Dani Johnson tallied with just under a minute remaining on a penalty kick.
Army (1-3-0), posting a season-high 19 shots, scored its quickest goal of the season in the second half when Rozzi beat keeper Rachel Locke with a shot to the near post off a long pass from Sam Gottlieb. The goal is the first of the season for Rozzi and career third with Gottlieb posting her first career point.
Three of Rozzi's four shots were on goal with junior Katie Holder recording a game-high six shots with two on goal. Freshman Clare Shea had four shots with one on goal as Army had eight shots on goal for the game.
The Black Knights fired six straight shots (three on goal) along with a pair of corner kicks at the start of the second half where they outshot Davidson 11-3. Shortly after tallying the opening goal, Rozzi booted a pair of shots on goal along with one by Holder in peppering the Davidson net over a span of 3:26.
Davidson added an insurance goal by Dav Cummings in the 68th minute to pull out to a 3-1 advantage. Over the time remaining, Army outshot Davidson 4-1 with two on goal along with being awarded four corner kicks.
Army opens a season long three-game homestand starting this weekend with Delaware Friday (Sept. 5) and Columbia on Sunday (Sept. 7).
