Dear Friends,
It’s an exciting time here at West Point as Graduation Week is upon us! The pomp and circumstance, all that makes grad week at an Academy so special, has begun and will culminate with graduation exercises next Wednesday, May 28, at Michie Stadium. Congratulations and gratitude go out to the Class of 2014. Thank you for what you have meant to us in Army Athletics, the Academy and the U.S. Army as a whole. You have represented all three contingents with an unmatched competitive spirit. Thank you to each and every one of you.
Let’s turn our attention back to athletics and the track and field teams, which competed at the IC4A/ECAC Championships at Princeton last weekend. Yearling Megan Gemar shattered the Academy pole vault record and tied for first place at the event. Cow Clyde Wilson highlighted the men’s side of things with a runner-up finish in the 800-meter run for the second year in a row.
Two additional newsworthy notes concerning our individual athletes feature five baseball players and one lacrosse player picking up postseason honors this week. Pitchers Gunnar Carroll, Alex Robinett and Nick Dignacco, along with infielder Kris Lindner and outfielder Mark McCants, garnered College Sports Madness all-league plaudits. In addition, lacrosse senior close defenseman Pat Hart earned a North Team roster spot on this weekend’s United States Lacrosse Association/LaxWorld North-South Senior All-Star Game in Baltimore, Md.
In other news, plebe golfer Peter Kim placed fourth among 10 individuals at the NCAA San Antonio Regional last weekend. If this season is any indication, Peter has a bright future ahead of him.
Finally, this week started with tremendous news out of the Patriot League, as Army won the conference’s Men’s President’s Cup on Monday. It marked the first time in six years Army has captured the Cup, which is awarded to the member institution with the highest cumulative sports point total for their Patriot League standings in sponsored men's and women's sports. Points are awarded based upon a combination of an institution's regular-season and tournament finishes in each sport.
You can expect one additional update next week, which will reveal our 2014 Black Knight Award winners, before we break for the summer.

Baseball
- Pitcher Gunnar Carroll was a first-team selection and pitchers Alex Robinett and Nick Dignacco, infielder Kris Lindner and outfielder Mark McCants were second-team choices as College Sports Madness released its Patriot League All-Conference teams. The staff at College Sports Madness selected the honorees.
Golf
- Plebe Peter Kim shot a 4-over par 76 in the final round of the NCAA San Antonio Regional at Briggs Ranch Golf Club last Saturday. Kim finished the 54-hole tournament with a 5-over 221 and placed fourth among 10 individual competitors at the San Antonio Regional. Kim tied for 31st among the entire field of 75 golfers at the regional.
- Kim's final score of 221 ranks tied for fourth among Army golfers at the NCAA Regionals, as William Park and Anthony Kim finished with a 221 in 2012 and 2011, respectively.
Lacrosse
- Firstie close defenseman Pat Hart’s lacrosse career extends one game as the West Tisbury, Mass., native earned a coveted spot on the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association/LaxWorld North-South Game’s North roster on Tuesday afternoon. Hart becomes the 138th player in Army history to earn a spot on the senior all-star team and first to represent the Black Knights since 2012.
- Hart, a second team All-Patriot League pick, joins six other players out of the Patriot League and is the conference’s lone representative on the North Team.
Softball
- Firstie Amanda Nguyen, yearling Kasey McCravey, and plebes Alee Rashenskas and Caroline Smith added a few more awards to their resumes as the contingent of Army softball players were tabbed for Regional honors by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association with their selection to the All-Northeast Team.
- The group is Army's largest contingent (former mark was two) selected with McCravey tabbed for first-team honors at third base, Nguyen was named to the second unit as an outfielder with Rashenskas and Smith third-team selections at second base and utility/pitcher, respectively.
Track & Field
- Yearling Megan Gemar shattered the Academy record in the pole vault in a second-place finish in the women's meet, and Clyde Wilson was runner-up in the men's 800-meter run as Army closed out the weekend on a successful note at the IC4A and ECAC Championships hosted at Princeton's Weaver Stadium.
- Gemar, who entered the weekend with the second highest mark of 3.72 meters in school history in the pole vault, turned in an outstanding performance clearing 3.87 meters (12-08.25) at the ECAC Championships on Sunday. She tied with Robert Morris' Bethany Bedford for first-place honors, but lost to Bedford for the title on fewer misses. Gemar smashed the previous Academy mark of 3.75 set by Kaci Clark in 2011.
- It is the second straight year that Wilson finished runner-up in the 800-meter run at the IC4As. He clocked a time of 1:49.81 in the finals, trailing the winning mark of 1:49.74 recorded by UMBC's Andrew Smith.
- Army's 4x400-meter relay team, comprised of Jose Santana, Matt Green, Patrick Taylor and Chris Smith, finished sixth with a time of 3:12.31. That foursome headed into the finals ranked eighth among the qualifiers.
