Dear Friends,
Another week and another two victories over Navy to celebrate. In addition, the spring championship picture is coming into focus with two of our teams clinching No. 2 seeds in their upcoming Patriot League postseason.
LACROSSE EXTENDS WINING STREAK OVER MIDS
The men’s lacrosse team earned its unprecedented sixth straight win over Navy, topping the Mids 14-7 in front of 10,774 fans at Michie Stadium. Connor Cook scored a career-high six points on three goals and three assists to earn Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honors. The victory secured the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League Tournament and a bye into the conference semifinals. The semis and finals will be hosted by top-seeded Loyola.
POLING BECOMES ALL-TIME WINS LEADER WITH VICTORY AT NAVY
Grant Riechmann’s win at No. 3 singles clinched a 4-3 victory over Navy in Annapolis. The win moved head coach Jim Poling into the top spot on the program’s coaching victories list. His 177th win in his 12 seasons at West Point include three Patriot League titles and 10 trips to the championship match in 11 years. Poling has racked up 404 wins in 28 seasons as a collegiate head coach.
ARMY-NAVY SERIES TO BE DECIDED ON BASEBALL DIAMOND
With the lacrosse and men’s tennis victories against Navy this week, the Star Match series with the Mids is tied 11-11. We have won four of the five spring stars contested thus far. The series will come down to the baseball series scheduled for April 26-27 in Annapolis. We currently hold a 13-12 overall series lead with four regular-season baseball games and potential postseason match ups still to be played.
FOOTBALL SPRING GAME SET FOR SATURDAY
Fans can get their first glimpse of the Army football team under Jeff Monken’s leadership Saturday afternoon at the annual Black-Gold Game. The format is schedule to be as game-like as possible, but is ultimately at the coaching staff’s discretion. Special teams will also be utilized at appropriate times. Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen, the Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy, and Brig. Gen. Richard Clark, the Academy’s commandant, will serve as the head coaches. One team will be made up of the first-team offense and second-team defense, while the other squad will have the first-team defense and second-team offense. The remaining players will be divided between the two teams to ensure each has enough players at each position. There is no admission to charge to gain access to Michie Stadium. Gate 3, which will open at 11 a.m., will be the only access point. There will be pregame activities for fans beginning at that time just inside the gate. Tickets for the 2014 season will also be available for purchase. Concessions will be on sale, and the team will remain on the field after the game to meet fans and sign autographs. In addition to guest coaches, there will be eight former Black Knights who will serve as honorary captains – Greg Gadson, Jodie Glore, Carlton Jones, Tom Morgan, Seth Niemann, Gary Steele, Rollie Stichweh and Jim Ward.
