Dear Friends,
While the competition schedule was on the lighter side this week, there was plenty of meaningful action around West Point. The action picks up even more this week as our women’s basketball team earned the right to host the Patriot League Championship Saturday evening.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ADVANCES TO TITLE GAME
The women’s basketball team scored a pair of home wins, defeating Boston University in the quarterfinals and American in the semifinals to earn a spot in the title game on Saturday night. It is the program’s first championship game appearance since 2006. Saturday’s game against Holy Cross will be broadcast to a national audience by CBS Sports Network beginning at 6 p.m.
BARNES PUNCHES TICKET TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Yearling Bryce Barnes finished sixth in the 197-pound bracket at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships to earn one of the conference’s seven automatic bids to the NCAA Championships. Barnes, who competed in last year’s national championships as well, will travel to Oklahoma City on March 20.
MORE HONORS FOR WILSON
Men’s basketball standout Kyle Wilson added another line to his resume this week with his selection to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 13 Second Team. Kyle led the league in scoring at 18.4 points per game and is the first yearling to earn NABC All-District honors since Gary Winton in 1976. The men’s basketball team’s tournament run came to a close with a loss to Boston University in the semifinals. Army is the only program in the league to have made the semis in each of the last two seasons.
Clyde Wilson NAMED AAA ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Cow middle distance runner Clyde Wilson was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week after earning bronze in the 800-meter run at the IC4A Indoor Championships. Wilson’s career-best time of 1:51.30 is the seventh best in Army history.
LACROSSE ADDS TO LEAGUE WIN TOTAL
The lacrosse team posted a decisive 13-3 win over Holy Cross to improve to 2-0 in Patriot League play. John Glesener posted a hat trick and was one of 11 players to find the back of the net. The team faces its toughest test to date this Saturday when it travels to second-ranked Loyola.
