Feb. 4, 2014
Dear Friends,
Plenty of service academy competitions and some key basketball victories highlighted the week here at West Point.
The rifle team gets top billing with its fifth straight victory over Navy. Michael Matthews earned medalist honors in the smallbore discipline. He was one of three Army Athletic Association Athletes of the Week. It was the eighth time in nine years that the rifle team earned a gold star.
Track & Field rookie Jose Santana had an impressive Army-Navy debut, tying the school record in the 60-meter dash and breaking the 14-yeard old mark in the 200-meter dash. He was honored as both an Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week and the Patriot League Men’s Rookie of the Week.
Another plebe had a successful showing versus service academy competition. Wrestling’s Simon Imonode won the 184-pound bracket at the All-Academy Championships. His 3-0 mark included wins over competitors from Norwich, Navy and Air Force. Simon rounded out our AAA Athlete of the Week Award recipients.
The women’s basketball team ran its winning streak to four games with home wins against Boston University and Loyola. Kelsey Minato scored a career-high 32 points and tied the school record with six three-pointers against the Terriers. She averaged 25.0 points for the week en route to Patriot League Player of the Week honors.
The men’s team split a pair of games, losing in overtime at BU and scoring a road win at Loyola. Zach Spiker’s group rallied from a 22-point second-half deficit to force overtime against the Terriers. Kyle Wilson scored 23 at BU and posted 25 points at Loyola. He joined Minato in earning the Patriot League Player of the Week honor. He is the first Army player to win the honor twice in the same season since 2007-08.
The tennis teams both began their respective dual schedules with a combined 5-0 record. The women scored three straight victories, while the men were unbeaten in two matches.
The Army-Navy rivalry is again at the forefront of this week’s schedule. The basketball teams will host the Mids in a Star Game doubleheader at Christl Arena on Saturday. There are very few tickets remaining, so be sure to get in on what is sure to be an exciting atmosphere. Both games will be televised live by CBS Sports Network. The women’s game is set to tip at 1:30 with the men to follow at 4 p.m.
We also get deeper into the fall schedule this week when the lacrosse team starts its 2014 campaign. Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year John Glesener and the rest of the squad host Massachusetts on Sunday at noon inside Michie Stadium. Please note the game time, which was originally slated for 1 p.m.
