Feb. 27, 2014
Dear Friends,
Patriot League champions and a basketball milestone highlighted the week of competition. Off the fields of friendly strife, we made an exciting announcement about the future of Army Athletics.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE ADDED TO SPORT OFFERINGS
On Monday, we made the announcement that women's lacrosse will join our lineup of NCAA Division I offerings beginning with the 2015-16 season. The program will be the 10th member of the Patriot League, joining American, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy. West Point has fielded a competitive club team since 1979. It is the first addition to the sport roster since women's soccer in 1986.
PAIR OF ROOKIES SHINE AT CHAMPIONSHIP MEETS
Swimming & Diving's Ariana Bullard and Track & Field's Jose Santana were named the Patriot League Women's Rookie of the Meet and Patriot League Men's Rookie of the Meet, respectively, at the conference championship competitions. Bullard won two individual championships, setting school records in the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly events. She was also part of the championship 200-yard freestyle relay team. Santana won a total of three Patriot League titles, including the 60-meter dash, the 400-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay. His time of 6.77 seconds in the 60-meter dash was an Academy and Patriot League Championship record. Both Ariana and Jose were also named the Army Athletic Association Co-Athletes of the Week.
MINATO REACHES MILESTONE
Kelsey Minato scored 11 points in Wednesday's win at Boston University to become the first yearling in Army history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. She is the 17th player in program history score 1,000 points. Kelsey needed just 59 games to reach the mark and has scored at least 10 points in a Patriot League best 44 straight games.
BASEBALL SWEEPS UMASS
The baseball team reeled off three straight wins against Massachusetts to improve to 4-2 on the season. Leadoff hitter Jon Crucitti has hit safely in all six games this season. He scored four runs and drove in four more in the three wins over the Minutemen.
HOCKEY GETS IN THE WIN COLUMN
The hockey team earned a 4-3 road win at Connecticut. Willie Faust scored two goals, and C.J. Reuschlein netted the game-winner in the third period. Parker Gahagen made a career-high 42 saves.
LACROSSE WINS SECOND STRAIGHT
John Glesener scored four goals to lead the team to a 12-2 win over Furman on Saturday. The game played at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., in conjunction with Face-Off For A Cause, hosted by the Wounded Warrior Project.
MEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT SEEDING SET
The men's basketball team will take the floor in Saturday's regular-season finale against Lafayette already knowing its Patriot League quarterfinal match up. Army will be the No. 5 seed and travel to fourth-seeded Bucknell on Wednesday, March 5.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL STILL IN TITLE CONTENTION
The women's basketball team clinched a quarterfinal home game on Thursday, March 6 and can still finish anywhere between first and third in the Patriot League standings. Army can claim the top seed for the second year in a row with a win at Lafayette and a Navy loss versus Loyola. Regardless of other outcomes, a win against the Leopards would assure the team of the No. 2 seed.
