This Week in Army Athletics

Nov. 27, 2014
Army Athletics would like to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving and we hope all of you enjoyed your time with family and friends. The basketball squads continued their winning ways prior to the Thanksgiving holiday with each team earning wins last weekend and in a doubleheader at Christl Arena on Tuesday.
The women beat Manhattan on the road and then earned a lopsided 79-35 win over service academy rival Air Force at home. Kelsey Minato poured in an average of 24.5 points per game in the two contests, including 25 against the Falcons. With her hot shooting against Air Force, she is now in the top-10 in career scoring at West Point with 1,207 points. Aimee Oertner achieved her best performance in her career with 19 points in the 81-49 victory over the Jaspers. Oertner was a perfect 7-of-7 from the field and had five rebounds. We are on a three-game winning streak and head to the West coast this weekend for matchups with UC Santa Barbara and Pepperdine.
The men have not missed a beat so far this season with an undefeated mark through the first five games of the season. We needed a strong second half to defeat Marist on Saturday evening and then a 15-point halftime lead pushed us over the top against Binghamton at Christl Arena on Tuesday. We held Marist without a field goal for more than nine minutes in the second half and used a 13-0 run to pull away from the Red Foxes in a 76-62 win. Three players were able to score in double figures, lead by Kyle Wilson's 20 points. On Tuesday, Wilson led the way again with 25 points in an 80-54 win over the Bearcats. We have started the season 5-0 for the first time since 1976-77, when the team, led by second-year head coach Mike Krzyzewski, was 7-0 to start the year.
It was a historical day at Michie Stadium last Saturday as the football team downed Fordham by a score of 42-31. Firstie fullback Larry Dixon rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns and put his name among the great running backs in Academy history. He became the fourth player at West Point to rush for over 3,000 yards in his career and was the 14th ball carrier to run for over 1,000 yards in a season. With the three touchdowns, he is now tied with Heisman Trophy winner Felix "Doc" Blanchard for sixth all-time with 26 career rushing touchdowns. We were able to wear down the Fordham defense in the second half, scoring 28 points in the second half with 21 coming in the fourth quarter. We started the fourth quarter with an impressive 20-play drive for over 11 minutes, capped off by a 1-yard run by Dixon. Prior to the game, we honored 36 seniors on Senior Day.
Wrestling's Chandler Smith has opened some eyes on the mat with an 11-0 start and two tournament titles in the 165 pound weight class. The senior won his weight class at the Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational a couple of weeks ago and last weekend he brought home a win at the New York State Championships in Ithaca, N.Y. He earned two pins, a technical fall and a 13-4 major decision in the finals to win the weight class.
Hockey returns to Tate Rink next weekend for a two-game series against Mercyhurst and tickets are still available. Tickets are also available for basketball contests with the women hosting St. Francis Brooklyn on Dec. 8, followed by the men welcoming Bryant on Dec. 9.
