This Week in Army Athletics
November 06, 2014 | General
While our football team lost its first Commander in Chief’s Trophy game of the season, we did experience success against Air Force on the rugby pitch and saw our men’s soccer team clinch a spot in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament.
Thank you to all who turned out and helped us sell out Michie Stadium against Air Force. While the result wasn’t what we were looking for, we are appreciative of the support and the tremendous crowd.
A try in the second half from yearling Andy Sullivan and an Andrew Borer conversion lifted the third-ranked Black Knights to a 19-17 victory over eighth-ranked and service academy foe Air Force. Sullivan’s try came in the 68th minute, with Borer’s kick putting Army on top for the first time since the 27th minute. Both Sullivan and Borer did not start the game but came in replacement of injured starters Jake Lachina and Logan Pearce. Leading 19-17 and performing in front of a large crowd at Anderson Rugby Complex, we held on for the victory. The Army women’s rugby team finished the season with a perfect 2-0 record against its service academy rivals, claiming a 29-7 victory over Air Force. The game was put out of reach early as we went up by a 19-0 advantage with yearling Tranella Patterson converting on a try, following by firstie Carissa Pekny earning the conversion.
The men’s soccer team went into senior night last Saturday with a chance to clinch a spot in the Patriot League Tournament and the Black Knights came out with a 1-0 win over Lafayette. There was a group of five teams vying for spots last weekend and Army punched its ticket, while the other four teams were eliminated. Army can finish as high as fourth in the league and host a home playoff game as the Black Knights play at PPL Park against Navy for the Arm-Navy Cup on Friday night. Senior goalkeeper Winston Boldt is one of 10 student-athletes selected as a finalist for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award in men’s soccer. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Fans will have a say in deciding the Senior CLASS Award winner and voting is open now at seniorCLASSaward.com. Fans have until November 24 to vote.
With four matches remaining in the regular season, the Army volleyball team currently sits in fifth place in the Patriot League standings. The top four teams will earn a spot in the Patriot League Tournament. In conference play, we are 7-5 and are one match behind Navy (8-4) and Colgate (8-4). This past weekend, we went on the road to Hamilton, N.Y., where we came away with a 3-1 victory over Colgate to sweep the season series from the Raiders. Army now holds the tiebreaker over Colgate, if we finish tied in the final standings. Looking ahead, the Black Knights have a pair of road games at Loyola (0-12 Patriot) and American (11-0 Patriot). We close the regular season at home against Lafayette (2-11) and Navy (8-4).

Cow Chris Szekely and firstie Will Viana each tallied wins for the men and firsties Kristen Barta and Keelie McNeary were both anchors on each of the relay teams that brought home a win over Michigan State.
