Army West Point Athletics

This Week in Army Athletics
November 24, 2014 | General
The Holleder Center was a busy building last weekend with six games, including four games combined for men's basketball and hockey as we took home the All-Military Classic title, along with three league points at Tate Rink.
The men's basketball team was crowned champions of the All-Military Classic with victories over Air Force and VMI. We hosted the Falcons for the first time at home since 1977 and with 20-point efforts from 2014-15 Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year Kyle Wilson and classmate Tanner Plomb, as we reached the championship game. The next night, five of our players scored in double figures, led by Wilson's 19 points and Plomb's 18. The two were named to the All-Tournament Team and Wilson was named the All-Military Classic Most Valuable Player.
Wilson added another milestone to his list of achievements on the floor at West Point. He came into the game against VMI two points shy of 1,000 for his career and it didn't take him long to hit that mark. He scored the first bucket of the game with a turnaround in the post. He became the 29th player in Academy history to join Army's 1,000 point club and with his 18 points against the Keydets, he currently has 1,017 career points.
The women's basketball team unveiled their 2014 Patriot League Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance banners on Tuesday night at Christl Arena. We capped off the night with a 68-59 win in the home opener over Stony Brook University.
The hockey team played right across the hall at Tate Rink and took three points from Holy Cross. Friday night's contest featured an exciting 5-4 overtime win with Conor Andrle scoring his first collegiate goal with 9.5 seconds left in the extra frame. The Crusaders tied the game late in third period, but we controlled the play in overtime and Andrle crashed the net and on his second or third swipe of the puck he found a way to get it into the back of the net. The next night neither team put a goal on the board as Cole Bruns turned aside 27 shots to secure a scoreless tie, which gave us a three-point weekend against a team that was unbeaten in league play this season. It was our first scoreless tie since 1995.
The football team dropped a 52-24 decision at Western Kentucky, despite firstie Larry Dixon rushing for 115 yards and classmate Angel Santiago scoring twice. Our team will play their final home game of the season Saturday at Michie Stadium against Fordham. We will honor the senior members of the team prior to the noon kickoff.
A sweep of visiting Lafayette coupled with Colgate's loss to American on Friday night secured a place in the Patriot League Tournament for the Army volleyball team. The Black Knights advanced to the conference playoffs for the 16th consecutive season after knocking off the Leopards by set scores of 25-15, 25-18, 25-22. Army will take on top-seeded and tournament host American in the Patriot League semifinal on Saturday. Lehigh and Navy are the other two teams in the tournament field with the Mountain Hawks earning the second seed, while Navy took third at the end of the regular season. The championship match will take place on Sunday afternoon. It is going to be a challenging semifinal match for the Black Knights as the Eagles have won 15 straight home matches.
Both soccer squads were honored with All-Patriot League honors, led by senior men's goalkeeper Winston Boldt, who was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year for the second-straight season. Boldt posted seven shutouts, a 0.88 save goals against average and a .788 save percentage, while starting in all 20 games for the Black Knights. His eight clean sheets this season rank fourth in Academy single-season history and his 24 career shutouts are the most by any Black Knight. He was joined on the All-Patriot League first team by sophomore Christian Clark, while junior Justin Kim was selected to the second team and Sean Mogan earned third team honors. Boldt was also honored with a spot on the all-academic squad. Junior Katie Holder and rookie Clare Shea were voted in with All-Patriot League honors on the women's side. Holder was a first team selection after leading Army in goals and points with six and 12, respectively. She was tabbed as a third team performer with a pair of goals and one gamewinner in her first season. Shea was the Gatorade National High School Girls' Player of the Year in 2013.
