Army West Point Athletics

This Week in Army Athletics
November 13, 2014 | General
Nov. 13, 2014
A win at historic Yankee Stadium, a finish to an undefeated season, advancing in the Patriot League Tournament, academic honors for our cadet-athletes, and great exposure on the horizon for the Army-Navy Game Presented by USAA, highlights the week that was in Army Athletics.
In one of our most exciting games of the season for Army football, Chris Carnegie’s 99-yard interception return for a touchdown in the final seconds sealed a 35-21 win over Connecticut. With the seconds ticking down, Carnegie stepped in front of a UConn pass and picked it off. He avoided one tackler and raced the length of Yankee Stadium, ending up at home plate for the clinching touchdown. Firstie quarterback Angel Santiago chipped in with a great effort with 97 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, while cow Joe Walker rushed for a pair of scores as well.
The fall season has yet to conclude for our teams as we still have teams in conference tournaments, but for those who are hungry for action on the hardwood, it kicks off this weekend. We welcome Air Force to West Point for the first time since 1977 for the All-Military Classic, which also features The Citadel and VMI. Women’s basketball starts its campaign on the road at Quinnipiac on Saturday and then returns to Christl Arena on Nov. 18 against Stony Brook.
The men’s soccer team advanced in the Patriot League Tournament with plebe Shaban Abousaud converting the game-clinching penalty kick against American, sending us to the semifinals against top-seeded Boston University on Friday. Firsite and Patriot League Goalie of the Year Winston Boldt finished with five saves and none came bigger than the four in overtime to send the game into PKs. With the kicks tied at 2-2, he stopped the chance from the Eagles and we advanced with a 4-3 triumph.
Men’s rugby concluded its first fall regular season as part of ODIA on Saturday with a 34-29 win over Wheeling Jesuit in West Virginia. The squad ran the table and finished undefeated during the regular season and will wait for its opponent in the playoffs coming up on Nov. 22. We improved to 8-0 and have defeated three nationally ranked opponents in our last three matches. We are now headed to the American Collegiate Rugby Conference Tournament in Charlotte, N.C., on Nov. 21-22 and start by taking on second-ranked Life University. The women’s rugby team jumped right into its conference tournament over the weekend and advanced to the sweet sixteen with a 41-14 win over Connecticut in the American Collegiate Rugby Association Final Plate Match. Next up for the women is the sweet sixteen this Saturday against Quinnipiac.
In addition to the on field excitement last weekend, we had a couple of off the field honors for the football team. Firsties Joe Drummond and Stephen Ricciardi were selected to the Capital One Academic All-District football first team for their efforts in the classroom. Both are among the 25 players chosen that will be placed on the Academic All-America ballot. Drummond and Ricciardi are Economics majors and play key roles on our defense. Ricciardi sports a 3.42 grade point average, while Drummond has a 3.68 GPA.
It was announced Saturday morning before the game at Yankee Stadium that ESPN’s College Gameday is going to broadcast live from the Army-Navy Game Presented by USAA. The signature college football show on ESPN will air from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Baltimore, Md., the site of the 115th Army-Navy Game Presented by USAA.
