Oct. 8, 2014
We had a full slate of games over the weekend at West Point and the wet weather didn’t have an effect on our home games as all four teams in action on post earned victories.
Sprint football continued its winning ways with its third win of the year, a lopsided 49-7 win over Cornell at Shea Stadium. Firstie quarterback J.J. Wartski was on his game with a career-high five touchdown tosses with three going to cow Tucker Van Dyke. We steamed through the Big Red defense for 515 total yards and held the Cornell offense to 192. Yearling running back Marqus Burrell carried the ball 10 times for 104 yards and a touchdown. It took a while for Army to get on the board, but a 35-point second quarter put the game out of reach and the Black Knights cruised from there. Army has now won 17 games in a row and Wartski leads the Collegiate Sprint Football League with 11 passing TDs this season. He has thrown at least three touchdowns in all three games this year.
Football remained unbeaten at home on Saturday with a 33-24 win over Ball State. It was a soggy afternoon, but two quick touchdowns put us in the lead early and we were able to seal the deal in the fourth quarter. Cow quarterback A.J. Schurr earned the start and scored the first two touchdowns of the game for us with a pair of one-yard plunges into the end zone. Firstie Angel Santiago relieved Schurr in the second quarter and finished with 89 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Firstie Larry Dixon continued his success at Michie Stadium with a career best 188 yards on the ground. He has nine career 100-yard games and it was his second game this season with at least 100 yards, both coming at West Point. Yearling Jeremy Timpf finished off the game in the fourth with a game-clinching interception for his third of the season, while cow Daniel Grochowski connected on two field goals, including a 43 yarder.
Women’s soccer was triumphant over Loyola on Saturday night at Clinton Field. Cow Katie Holder scored her fifth of the year to give us the 1-0 win over the Greyhounds. It was yearling Jordan Cassalia’s first shutout of the season and she made seven saves with six in the final 45 minutes. We have played extremely well at home this season with a 5-2-0 mark. There is a lot of teams vying for the top spots in the league and we are currently in the middle of it with a 2-1-1 record in Patriot League play.
The volleyball team split its Patriot League weekend with a sweep over Loyola on Saturday and a tough five-set loss to league-leading American on Sunday. Against the Greyhounds, Cow Nicole Perri led Army offensively with 14 kills and plebe Amanda Clay ended the night with 13. Plebe Rachel Gearon had five kills and a .625 hitting percentage to pace the Army offense. Cow Vanessa Edwards set a new career-high with six aces, added six digs and led all players with 36 assists. The next day, we took the first set and then forced a deciding fifth set with a thrilling 29-27 win. The Eagles, however, came out on top with a 15-12 win in the final set.
Women’s rugby got back on the winning track with an impressive 119-5 win over visiting Northeastern on Sunday. We had 10 different players record tries, including a game-high three from cow Chioma Odocha and cow Allie McDonald. We had eight tries in a row to start the game and cow Carissa Pekny was successful on 12 of her conversions. As always, thanks for your continued support of our cadets as they compete on the fields of friendly strife.
