I am sure by now, you have read or heard reports from Saturday regarding a recruiting incident involving our football program this past winter.
I encourage you to visit the following link for the superintendent's statement on the entire incident: Click Here
Lt. Gen. Caslen does an excellent job of putting the entire incident in proper perspective, while pointing out the many inaccuracies contained in the initial report.
While disappointing, I know we handled this incident with integrity and in a manner expected of the United States Military Academy.
We did have some good news to talk about this past weekend.
A try from firstie Collum Magee in the 76th minute of the game lifted the sixth-ranked men’s rugby team to a 34-30 victory over third-ranked Kutztown in conference play from Anderson Rugby Complex last Saturday afternoon. We held the advantage for a majority of the game before Kutztown recorded 11 unanswered to take the lead. Magee’s try and a successful conversion from firstie Logan Pearce gave us the edge in the waning minutes. Cow Peter Basnight, plebe Jake Lachina, Magee and Pearce all factored in on the scoresheet, handing Kutztown its first loss of the season and giving us a perfect 6-0 mark entering our final regular season match of the fall. Army is in sole possession of first place in the Rugby East Conference and we welcome Air Force on Friday night as part of a rugby doubleheader with both men’s and women’s squads in action.
The Army women’s soccer team had a successful send off to its Class of 2015 with 2-0 win over Lafayette on Senior Night on Oct. 25. The win clinched a spot in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament for us. We have been ruled out for the top spot, but can still receive a bye into the semifinals or host a quarterfinal match next Tuesday. Yearling Sam Gottlieb scored just before halftime and firstie Madison Oliver added a late insurance goal off a free kick in the second half. We are one of four teams to clinch a berth as of Oct. 25 and the win put us in third place with 15 league points. Colgate, Navy and Boston University punched their tickets to the conference tournament earlier in the month. Two spots remain with Bucknell, Lehigh and Loyola battling for those slots. The Patriot League Tournament starts with the top two teams receiving byes, while the next two host the final pair of teams for a quarterfinal match on Nov. 4. The semifinals and championship are set for Nov. 7 and 9.
Army senior men’s soccer goalkeeper Winston Boldt is one of 10 student-athletes selected as a finalist for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award in men’s soccer. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The winner of the award best exemplifies excellence in communication, classroom, character and competition. Boldt was one of 30 Division I men’s soccer players named on the initial ballot in September before being selected as a finalist by a media committee. Fans will have a say in deciding the Senior CLASS Award winner and voting is open now at seniorCLASSaward.com. Fans have until November 24 to vote. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner, which will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Men’s College Cup in December.
Volleyball and hockey came away with league points during the weekend as well. The volleyball squad overcame a 2-0 deficit in the Bucknell match by winning the third set 25-18 before avoiding four straight match points in the 32-30 triumph in the fourth set. The hockey team erased a third-period deficit to earn a 3-3 tie against Robert Morris and we have recorded league points in each of our first three weekends of the season. Ryan Nick scored his first collegiate goal midway through the third period to tie the game.
Tickets are still available for the final football home game against Fordham. The Air Force game is sold out. Hockey tickets are also on sale for Friday night’s matchup versus Brown.
