It was a quiet weekend on post with many of our teams traveling throughout the Northeast and Midwest, while the hockey team continued its home schedule at Tate Rink and blanked Canisius on Saturday night.
For the third time in the last three seasons, our hockey squad kept Canisius off the scoreboard on a Saturday night. Goaltender Parker Gahagen recorded his first career shutout with 28 saves. He was tested the most in the third period and pushed aside 10 shots. C.J. Reuschlein provided the first and only lead of the game with his second of the season coming 32 seconds into the contest. Brendan McGuire and Maurice Alvarez chipped in with two points each on a goal and an assist. Alvarez's score came on the power play, while McGuire tallied his second of the year. We sit at 2-2-0 and tied atop the Atlantic Hockey standings with four points through the first four games.
The volleyball team finished the week with two victories and riding a three-game winning streak going into this weekend's home matches against Lehigh and Bucknell. We sit in the middle of pack in the Patriot League standings after a 3-1 win over Holy Cross on Saturday. We fell behind with a first set defeat, but responded by taking the final three sets for a road victory to improve to 5-4 in league play. Nicole Perri and Rachel Gearon each posted double-digit kills with 17 and 12, respectively. Plebe Avery Alexander registered a double-double, the first of her career, with season-highs in assists (41) and digs (13). We hosted NJIT in a midweek matchup and swept the Highlanders with lopsided victories in the first and third sets.
Women's rugby traveled to Navy over the weekend and cruised to a 61-20 victory over the Midshipmen for their third victory of the season. The scoring was spread out with seven different cadet-athletes registering points. We jumped out to an early 29-5 lead in the first half and never looked back, holding Navy off the board until late in the second half. Kate Roose and Carissa Pekny led the way as Roose finished with three tries and a total of 12 points off the foot Pekny. We continue our road swing this Saturday at AIC before wrapping up the regular season with service academy rival Air Force on Halloween.
Men's rugby increased its undefeated streak to five games with a 73-12 lopsided victory on the road at Buffalo. We held the Bulls to two tries and had 11 different players tally points. We scored the first 39 points of the half and were led by Logan Pearce, who finished with two tries on the afternoon. The schedule continues with two home games to close out the regular season and we are going to be facing two of our toughest tests of the year with No. 3 Kutztown coming to West Point on Oct. 25, followed by No. 7 Air Force on Oct. 31. Kickoff for the Kutztown game is set for 1 p.m. this Saturday at Anderson Rugby Complex.

Football (2-5)
- Football dropped a road game at Kent State on Saturday.
- Yearling Josh Jenkins finished with 13 tackles with 10 solo stops, along with an interception on the first play of the game to earn FCS Independent Defensive Player of the Week. He has three interceptions this season.
- Firstie Larry Dixon moved into fifth place all-time in Academy rushing history with 71 yards. Dixon vaulted past Gerald Walker (2,700) and teammate Raymond Maples (2,754) to move into fifth with 2,769 for his career.
- Football is on an off week and is back at Michie Stadium against Air Force on Nov. 1.
Hockey (2-2-0, 2-2-0 Atlantic Hockey)
- Yearling Parker Gahagen pushed aside 28 shots to record his first collegiate shut out on Saturday night in a 3-0 win for the Black Knights over Canisius. He was named Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Week.
- With Saturday's win, Army remains at the top of the Atlantic Hockey standings with four points with two league wins.
- Plebe Brendan McGuire finished with three points in the two-game series with two goals and an assist. He scored his first collegiate goal on Friday night against the Golden Griffins.
- Plebes Tyler Pham and Conor Andrle rank in the top-10 nationally in points per game among rookies. Andrle is averaging 1.33 points per game, while Pham has four points in four games.
- Hockey welcomes Robert Morris for two games this weekend at Tate Rink for 7:05 p.m. starts on Friday and Saturday.
Men's Rugby (5-0, 4-0 ECRC)
- The men's rugby team defeated conference rival Buffalo 73-12 at UB Stadium in Buffalo, N.Y., on Saturday afternoon.
- Firstie Logan Pearce led the scoring with 14 points (two tries and two conversions), while plebe David Huff put up two tries.
- Eleven Black Knights found their way on the score sheet.
- The men will host nationally ranked Kutztown in conference action on Saturday (Oct. 25).Their final home game will come in a doubleheader against Air Force on Halloween.
Volleyball (10-12, 5-4 Patriot League)
- The Army volleyball team won both of its matches last week to improve to 10-12 on the season and 5-4 in Patriot League contests.
- Cow outside hitter Nicole Perri led the offensive attack with 27 kills and was the only Army player to register double-digit kills in both matches. She has reached the 10-kill plateau in six consecutive games, 14 times overall, and leads Army with 243 kills this season.
- A pair of plebes, Rachel Gearon and Avery Alexander also posted impressive performances in Army's wins. Gearon was second on the team with 19 kills, including a season-high 12 versus Holy Cross. Alexander stepped into the setter position against the Crusaders and posted season highs in assists (41) and digs (13). The double-double was the first of her career.
- Volleyball is back on the court this weekend against Lehigh and Bucknell at Gillis Field House.
Men's Soccer (5-4-4, 2-2-1 Patriot League)
-Army played to a 0-0 draw at an American team receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll on Saturday.
-Firstie Winston Boldt made three saves in the game for his sixth shutout of the season, while extending his Academy record to 22 career clean sheets.
-Army moves to 0-1-2 this season against teams receiving votes in the NSCAA national poll (0-0 draw vs. Air Force, 2-0 loss at Boston University) -The Black Knights face Rutgers on Tuesday, Oct. 21 in their final nonconference contest of the regular season.
Women's Soccer (6-7-2, 3-1-2 PL)
- Army fell to Princeton in its final non-conference match.
- Black Knights and host Lehigh battled to a 0-0 overtime draw in Patriot League action Saturday.
- Army is currently tied with Boston University for third place in the Patriot League standings with 11 points (3-1-2).
- Army closes out its regular-season home slate this week hosting Holy Cross (1-4-1) Wednesday and Lafayette (2-4-0) Saturday on Senior Night.
Women's Rugby (3-4, 2-2 ACRA)
- The women's rugby team defeated service academy rival Navy 61-20 in Annapolis, Md., on Saturday morning.
- Firstie Kate Roose led the Army offense with three tries, while cow Carissa Pekny added 12 points.
- The Black Knights will close out a three-game road swing with a meeting at American International College on Saturday (Oct. 25) before returning home to face Air Force in the regular season finale.
Men's Swimming & Diving (1-0)
- Defeated Massachusetts, 172-128, in the team's first dual-meet of 2014.
- Firstie Will Viana, cow Chris Szekely, and cow Sam Mo all posted first place finishes in two events each to lead the Black Knights.
- Army won both relays over the Minutemen and firstie diver Josh Urnezis scored a 242.10 in the 1-meter for a third-place finish.
- The Black Knights start off the season 1-0 and are back in action for a tri-meet against the University of Buffalo and Michigan State in Buffalo, N.Y. Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
Women's Swimming & Diving (0-1)
- Lost to Massachusetts, 168-132, but out swam the Minutemen in the backend of the meet.
- Cow Molly Mucciarone led the team's efforts by touching the wall first in the 50 free and 100 fly.
- Yearling Jess Burkett also posted a first-place finish for the Black Knights and firstie diver Maggie Churchill placed fourth in the 1-meter with a score of 179.46.
- The Black Knights are back in action for a tri-meet against the University of Buffalo and Michigan State in Buffalo, N.Y., on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
Men's Cross Country
- Army dropped the annual Star Meet against Navy, 16-47, in Annapolis, Md., on Saturday morning.
- Cow Tom Girardot was the Black Knights' top finisher, taking fifth overall.
- Firstie Cody Barger and yearling Matthew Bearden finished second and third for the Black Knights, taking 11th and 15th, respectively.
- The men will have nearly two weeks of rest before the Patriot League Championships get underway on Nov. 1 in Bethlehem, Pa.
Women's Cross Country
- The Black Knights came up just short in the Star Meet at Navy, falling 26-29 to the Midshipmen in Annapolis, Md., on Saturday morning.
- Army placed two runners in the top three with firstie Jennifer Comfort taking second and cow Madison Hill placing third.
- Firstie Rachel King was the women's third finisher, taking fifth overall.
- The women will get postseason competition underway on Nov. 1 in Bethlehem, Pa., for the Patriot League Championships.
Men's Tennis
-Seven Black Knights represented Army at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships.
-Firstie Alex Van Velzer and yearling Sam Lampman reached the quarterfinals in doubles.
-Army totaled five victories in the tournament.
- The Black Knights are back in action on Oct. 24-25 for the Army Invitational.
Women's Tennis
- The Army women's tennis team competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament over the weekend, hosted by Yale.
- Cows Carolyn Pitman and Eva Sung, along with firstie Elle Taylor and yearling Nancy Porter represented the Academy.
- Sung and Pitman each fell in their opening singles round match, and the duo also dropped their opening doubles match.
- Taylor and Porter claimed an 8-5 victory in their opening doubles match before falling in their second. - The team will close out the fall season with a trip to the Lehigh Invite on Oct. 24-26.
