Army Battles Lehigh To Scoreless Draw
October 18, 2014 | Women's Soccer
Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Cassalia finished with four saves, three in regulation, including back-to-back stops in the first half, and one in overtime en route to recording her second shutout of the season and career eighth.
Lehigh, who outshot Army 16-7, created its best offensive chances just over 14 minutes into the game on back-to-back attempts just three seconds apart by Grace Correll and Danielle Salans, but were stymied as Cassalia deflected the first shot and pulled up with the save on the header.
The Mountain Hawks outshot Army 5-3 in the first half and held an 8-4 advantage in the second half as both teams increased the pressure, then kept each other in check in the first overtime as neither was able to get off a shot.
All three of Lehigh's attempts in overtime came in the final 10 minutes of action, but just one was on goal with Cassalia, who is ranked nationally in saves, making the stop on Paige Elliott's attempt three minutes into the final period. Two minutes later the Mountain Hawks fired their final two shots with Salans' attempt blocked and Brinn McClennan's shot going over the net.
Junior Katie Holder led Army with three shots, two in the first half with the first blocked and second going wide. Her final shot came in the final seconds of regulation as the Black Knights booted four in the second half with Kayla Swasey's header caught by Lehigh keeper Ashley Blanks.
Both teams picked up a point with the tie with the Black Knights and Boston University sharing third place in the league standings with 11 points (3-1-2). Lehigh (2-0-4) is in fifth place with 10 points.
Navy moved into second place with a 4-1-1 mark (13 points) after defeating Holy Cross, 2-0, and leader Colgate tightened its grip onto first place with 16 points (5-0-1) following its 2-0 win over Bucknell. Boston University lost its hold onto second place following a 1-0 loss to Loyola.
The Black Knights close out their home schedule this week hosting Holy Cross (9-4-2, 1-4-1 PL) Wednesday and Lafayette (5-8-0, 2-4-0) Saturday evening on Senior Night.
