One of our highlights of the fall comes every October as we welcome in new members into the Army Sports Hall of Fame and last Friday we honored 10 for their selection at Kimsey Athletic Center and Eisenhower Hall.
Rifleman Chris Abalo, football and wrestling standout John Green, women's swimming national champion Jennifer Grzbek, boxer Donald Hull, men's basketball star Jim Oxley, wrestling and football letterwinner Al Paulekas, track and field and cross country extraordinaire Bill Straub, men's soccer's Tom Tyree, Dr. John Feagin and former Superintendent Gar Davidson comprised the Class of 2014. The plaque unveiling ceremony was held at the Kenna Hall of Army Sports inside Kimsey Athletic Center and the new members were also honored at halftime of the football game against Rice.

Last week was a successful one for Army Athletics with multiple teams earning victories, including rifle and hockey which both opened their home schedules. The hockey team was winners in its season opener on Friday night against Sacred Heart with firstie Zak Zaremba scoring the game winner and yearling Parker Gahagen turning aside 16 of his 34 saves in the third period. Rifle’s young squad swept its triangular on Monday afternoon with wins over Memphis and MIT. We edged out the Tigers with a 4632-4626 victory and cruised past MIT by a 4632-4418 score.
Sprint Football celebrated Senior Day in a big way with 527 yards of total offense and came away with a 48-32 win over Mansfield to remain undefeated in 2014 at 4-0. Yearling Marqus Burrell led the way with 117 yards on 25 carries with a touchdown and cow Jesse Shackelford scored twice while racking up 76 yards on 15 carries. Men’s soccer improved to 5-4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Patriot League last week with triumphs over Colgate and Loyola. Yearling Nick Williams and plebe Spencer Goldstein tallied second-half goals to propel us to the win at Colgate. We returned to Clinton Field on Saturday night and earned another 2-1 win to even our league record. This time it was early goals from Christian Clark and Tanner Vosvick that were the difference. Clark’s goal was the fastest of the season, coming 1:58 into the contest.
The second-ranked men’s rugby team stayed perfect on the season with a 26-19 win on Sunday night under the lights at Anderson Rugby Complex. It was a hard fought victory with Iona jumping out to an early 12-0 lead in the opening half. We responded with 26 unanswered points to keep the game out of reach. The volleyball team also split last weekend with a victory over Lafayette on Saturday after falling to Navy on Friday night. We were in a battle with the Leopards, going five sets. We had a 2-1 lead going into the fourth set with wins in the second and third games. The fifth set wasn’t even close as we cruised to a 15-4 victory. Women’s soccer defeated American, 2-1, for its second-straight Patriot League victory with cow Katie Holder netting the game winner for the second game in a row and yearling Jordan Cassalia making nine saves.

Football (2-4)
- Firstie quarterback Angel Santiago compiled 143 yards of total offense against Rice on Saturday. He ran for 100 yards for the second time this season and third time in his career.
- Santiago threw his first touchdown of the season to Xavier Moss in the corner of the end zone in the third quarter.
- Firstie running back Larry Dixon inched closer to classmate Raymond Maples for sixth on the all-time rushing list with 86 yards against the Owls.
- Firstie linebacker Stephen Ricciardi had his best game of the year with 10 total tackles, including three tackles for losses of six yards. He also had a pass breakup.
- Football heads to Kent State this weekend for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on ESPN3.
Hockey (1-1-0, 1-1-0 Atlantic Hockey)
- Army started the season in conference play with a split against Sacred Heart.
- Firstie Zak Zaremba scored the game winner on Friday night in a 2-1 win. Yearling C.J. Reuschlein tallied the first goal of the season.
- Yearling goaltender Parker Gahagen made 34 saves in the win, including 16 in the final period.
- Seven plebes saw time in the lineup and Tyler Pham led the way with two points on a goal and an assist in the two games.
- Black Knights are back at home against Canisius for two this weekend. Tickets are still available.
Men’s Rugby (4-0, 4-0 ECRC)
- The men’s rugby team improved to a perfect 4-0 on the season with a 26-19 victory over Iona.
- Five different Black Knights made it on the scoresheet, with tries from cow Jacob Banarhall, firstie Collum Magee, yearling Andrew Fargo and plebe David Huff.
- Firstie Logan Pearce was 3-of-4 on conversions.
- The men will travel to Buffalo on Saturday, Oct. 18 for a 1 p.m. meeting with the Bulls before returning home to host top-ranked Kutztown (Oct. 25) and service academy rival Air Force (Oct. 31).
Sprint football (4-0, 4-0 CSFL)
- Improved to 4-0 with 48-32 victory over Mansfield on Senior Day.
- Army honored its 13 firsties prior to kickoff.
- It was the team’s 18th consecutive win.
- Army rushed for 265 yards and had 527 yards of total offense.
- The Black Knights continue their season at 7 p.m. on Friday night at Princeton.
Men’s Soccer (5-4-3, 2-2-0 Patriot League)
- Army picked up its first two Patriot League wins of the season last week, defeating Colgate, 2-1, on Oct. 8 before topping Loyola, 2-1, on Oct. 11. - Yearling forward Nick Williams scored his second goal of the year at Colgate, while plebe forward Spencer Goldstein scored the game winner for the first goal of his career.
- Firstie Sean Mogan and yearlings Christian Ollen and Ethan Spivack provided assists in Wednesday’s win.
- Yearling midfielder Christian Clark added his first collegiate goal 1:58 into the win over Loyola, and yearling defender Tanner Vosvick netted his first of the season.
- Firstie goalkeeper Winston Boldt made three saves against Colgate before stopping four shots opposite Loyola.
- Men’s soccer is back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. at American.
Volleyball (8-12, 4-4 Patriot League)
- Army held leads in all three sets at Navy, leading 23-19 in the opening set, 23-20 in the second and 20-18 in the third, before falling to the Mids.
- The following night in Easton, Pa., Army responded to losing a close first set with a 25-10 win in set two and a 25-18 victory in the third. The Leopards extended the match to five sets, but Army closed the match with a dominating 15-4 win in the fifth.
- Cow setter Vanessa Edwards posted consecutive assist-dig double-doubles, giving her eight on the season and 24 in her career. Edwards set a new career high with 61 assists in the five-set win over Lafayette. She leads the conference in assists with 9.99 per set.
- Plebe Caroyln Bockrath and cow Nicole Perri tied for the team lead with 17 kills against Lafayette and Bockrath’s total tied a career high. She leads the Patriot League with a .379 hitting percentage.
- Volleyball is in action on Wednesday at home against NJIT and then at Holy Cross on Saturday for a 4 p.m. start.

- Army defeated American, 2-1, for its second straight Patriot League win.
- Cow Katie Holder notched her second straight game winner to boost her season total to six goals.
- Yearling goalkeeper Jordan Cassalia made nine saves in the game highlighted by a pair of stops late in the second half on an Eagles’ penalty kick. - Her performance earned her Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week honors for the second time this season.
- Army is currently tied with Navy for third place in the Patriot League standings with a 3-1-1 mark (10 points), just one point behind Boston University (3-0-2).
- The Black Knights close out their non-league slate hosting Princeton Tuesday evening at Clinton Field where Army is 5-2-0.

- Army’s young team swept a triangular Monday with Memphis and MIT in its home debut at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.
- The Black Knights edged the Tigers, 4632-4626, and rolled over MIT, 4632-4418.
- Memphis nipped Army by a point in smallbore (2293-2292), but the Black Knights rallied in air rifle where they outpointed the Tigers by seven points (2340-2333) to pull out the decision.
- Plebe Josh Martin led Army for the second straight meet in smallbore where he earned runner-up honors with a 580, just two points behind the medalist.
- Cow Olivia Nardone, along with sophomores Marvin Lewis and Elizabeth Mostert, tied for runner-up honors in air rifle with identical 586s.
- The Black Knights return to action Friday against GARC rival Nebraska in Charleston, S.C.

- The women’s rugby team fell to conference-leading Norwich 51-21 in Northfield, Vt.
- Firstie Kate Roose and cow Carissa Pekny were the only two Black Knights to put scores on the board with Roose adding two tries and Pekny going a perfect 3-0 on conversions while adding one try.
- The women will continue their three-game road trip with stops at Navy (Oct. 18) and American International (Oct. 25).
