October 11, 2014 | Women's Soccer
Shea opened the scoring on a header in front of the goal just before halftime as Army took a 1-0 lead into the locker room. The goal is the second of the season for the Army freshman and her first conference score with Wishart garnering her third assist this year and first in league play.
The Black Knights (6-6-1, 3-1-1 PL) stretched their lead to 2-0 just over ten minutes into the second half on a header by Holder in front of the goal for her team-leading sixth goal of the season and third game winner.
It is the second straight game that the Army forward has scored the winning tally following last week's 1-0 edging of Loyola. The goal is Holder's third in league play this season. Wishart picked up her second league assist and team leading fourth on her second helper of the game.
American (3-11-0, 0-5-0) cut Army's lead in half just over two minutes later (58:12) on a seven-yard shot by Lindsay Muir that drew the host Eagles to 2-1. The Black Knight defense did not bend as sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Cassalia recorded three of her five second half saves, to include nixing a penalty kick, over the time remaining.
Cassalia, ranked 11th nationally, finished with eight saves as the Eagles fired off 16 shots to include 12 in the second half. Army took six of its ninie shots in the first half along with holding a 5-2 corner kick lead. The Eagles led 5-1 in corners ini the second half for a 7-6 advantage.
The win is Army's first over American since a 4-0 blanking of the Eagles at West Point in 2012, and is the first road win since 2011 (3-0) as the Black Knights posted their fourth win against five losses in a 19-game series that shows 10 ties. Prior to today's win, the last five games were shutouts, to include a pair at West Polnt last year - regular season and a first round Patriot League playoff game.
The Black Knights host Princeton Tuesday evening in closing out their non-conference slate where Army is 5-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference games. Army heads to Bethlehem, Pa., to take on Lehigh for a 7 p.m. league match on Saturday, Oct. 18.
