Army Falls To Patriot League Leader Colgate
October 01, 2014 | Women's Soccer
The victory extended Colgate's win streak to seven and unbeaten string to nine as the Raiders (8-1-1, 3-0-0 PL), ranked first in the Mid-Atlantic Region, posted their eighth shutout of the season. Colgate, picked third in the league's preseason vote, is in first place in the league with a 3-0-0 mark.
Coy opened the scoring tallying from the top of the box in the 14th minute for a quick 1-0 Colgate lead. The Raiders, leading 2-0 at halftime, scored twice within a span of 2:34 in the second half on back-to-back unassisted goals by Corey Persson's (60:01) and Coy's second tally (62:35) to pull out to a 4-0 advantage.
Colgate, receiving votes for the second straight week in the NSCAA Division I National poll, extended its early 1-0 lead to 2-0 just before halftime on Catherine Williams' goal with just 33 seconds remaining on the clock.
The Black Knights' (4-6-1, 1-1-1 in the PL) most dangerous chance in the first half was on a header by junior Katie Holder nixed by starter Brenna Mason 10 minutes into the game. Mason, who had three saves in 77 minutes, shared the shutout with Erin Cummings, who finished with four saves over the final 13 minutes of action.
After Coy's opening goal, Army rejected three shots by Colgate over the next 11 minutes with the first a team save by Carly Katalinic by the near post on another attempt by Coy, who had a game-high five shots. Army keeper Jordan Casssalia, who was aggressive throughout the game, followed with three of her four saves in the first half.
Army was outshot 22-10 and trailed 10-8 in corner kicks. Junior Candace Stewart led Army with four shots. The Black Knights kept the pressure on to the end of the game with Sam Gottlieb's on-goal attempt at 89:47 rejected by Cummings.
Army will look to bounce back Saturday when it returns home, where the Black Knights are 4-2-0 and 1-0-0 PL at Clinton Field this year, to host Loyola
