Dear Friends,
We hope you had a great holiday season and were able to spend time with friends and family. While 2013 was certainly a great year, we look forward to making 2014 even better.
Despite a light competition schedule during the holidays, it was a very busy time. It was my distinct pleasure to introduce Jeff Monken as the 37th head football coach at West Point at a press conference on Dec. 30. Jeff has been the head coach at Georgia Southern since 2010, leading the program to a 38-16 record, two Southern Conference championships and three NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision semifinal appearances. In addition to his stellar coaching credentials, Jeff brings an enthusiasm and attention to detail that we are confident will return winning football to the banks of the Hudson while continuing to support the Academy’s mission of producing leaders of character.
On the field so friendly strife, both basketball teams are off to unbeaten starts in Patriot League play.
The women’s team, led by Kelsey Minato, is 10-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The league’s leading scorer at 20.1 points per game, Kelsey was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week and the Patriot League Player of the Week. She scored 21 against Lafayette and then posted a career-high 29 points in the come-from-behind win at Loyola. She also set an Academy record with 14 made free throws in the win over the Leopards. She ranks fourth nationally with a 93.6 percent accuracy rate at the line.
The men’s team has won three straight and five of its last six games. Wins at Lafayette and over Loyola marked the first time in program history the team has been 2-0 in Patriot League play. Kyle Wilson averaged 20.0 points per game in the two victories. He and Tanner Plomb both scored 24 points versus the Leopards, and he led the team with 18 in the win against the Greyhounds. Ten of his points came in the final six minutes after Loyola had cut Army’s lead from 13 points to just two.
Both teams will face Lehigh on Wednesday. The women host the Mountain Hawks at 7 p.m., while the men’s team will play at Stabler Arena. Saturday marks the first meetings of the season with Navy on the hardwood. The doubleheader begins at 1:30 with the women’s game, followed by the men’s game at 4 p.m. Both games will be televised live by CBS Sports Network.
