Dear Friends,
The basketball teams continued their winning ways, and the hockey team scored a victory in its international rivalry to highlight this past week of competition.
On the ice, Brian Riley’s squad headed to Ontario for a showdown with long-time rival Royal Military College and came away with a 5-2 victory in the exhibition contest. Maurice Alvarez scored two goals, including the game-tying goal in the second period. Maurice was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for his efforts in the win.
The women’s basketball team won two key Patriot League games, defeating Colgate and American. The team is now 6-2 in conference play and is tied for second place with the Eagles. Jen Hazlett reached an important individual milestone, becoming the 16th player in program history to score 1,000 career points. She reached the mark during a 15-point second half that led the team to its win at American. Kelsey Minato also put her name in the record book with a 30-point night against Colgate. Not only did she become the 23rd player to score at least 30 in a game, but she also broke her own record with 15 made free throws.
The men’s basketball team split a pair of games, winning on the road at Colgate and losing to first-place American. The win in Hamilton was the team’s fourth straight Patriot League road victory, matching the program record set last season. The team currently occupies third place in the Patriot League standings with a 6-2 mark heading into this week’s competition. A win in Wednesday’s game at Boston University would move the team into a tie for second with the Terriers.
Two other squad boasted undefeated weeks. The wrestling team also picked up two league victories, defeating EIWA foes Penn and Drexel. The team has now won their last four dual matches. The men’s swimming & diving team swept a quadrangular meet at George Mason, topping the host Patriots and Patriot League foes Boston University and American.
The upcoming schedule is full of service academy competitions. The track & field teams and the rifle squad head to Navy this weekend for their respective Star competitions against the Mids. The gymnastics and wrestling teams will compete at their All-Academy Championships. The gymnastics meet will be held on Saturday in Houston, while the wrestling team will head to Coast Guard for its competition against the Bears, Merchant Marine, Norwich, Navy, Air Force, VMI and The Citadel.
The Army-Navy basketball doubleheader is less than two weeks away. There are limited tickets available so be sure to assure your spot in Christl Arena on Feb. 8 by ordering today.
