Dear Friends,
A number of strong individual performances highlighted this week’s competition. Both basketball teams, the swimming & diving teams and the wrestling squad also captured key conference victories.
Starting on the hardwood, the women’s team earned a road win at Holy Cross on Wednesday. Not only was it a significant win in the league standings, but it marked Dave Magarity’s 133rd victory at West Point. Dave is now the program’s all-time leader in wins. He will be honored in a pre-game ceremony Wednesday night prior to the match up with Colgate.
The gymnastics squad hosted the West Point Open at Christl Arena over the weekend. The men finished third as a team, and Jesse Glenn captured his second straight all-around title. He is the first Black Knight to take the individual honor twice during their career. Jesse was honored as the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week.
Clyde Wilson also captured an individual honor with the Patriot League Male Track Athlete of the Week certificate. Clyde won the 1,000-meter run at the Battle of Beantown, posting a time of 2:26.26. He beat the IC4A standard by more than two seconds with Army’s top time this season. He was one of four individuals to reach the IC4A qualifying mark.
The swimming & diving teams both won a pair of Patriot League competitions on the road this week. The women’s 200-yard freestyle quartet of Ariana Bullard, Molly Mucciarone, Grace Hamilton and Megan Grier touched first with a Lineberry Natatorium (Colgate) record time of 1:36.26. The mark had stood since 1993.
The wrestling team captured a 26-10 win in an EIWA match at American. Paul Hancock (157 pounds), Tyler Rauenzahn (141) and Chandler Smith (165) each notched bonus-point wins.
The men’s basketball team rebounded from its first conference loss to post a home victory over Bucknell in front of a national-television audience on CBS Sports Network. The win secured the program’s best six-game start to Patriot League play (5-1) and put the team in sole possession of third place, two games ahead of the Bison. Kyle Wilson scored 28 points, including 14 free throws.
Zach Spiker’s squad hosts a key Patriot League match up on Saturday versus American. Tip-off is at 4 p.m. The Eagles are one of two unbeaten teams in conference play entering this week, but face the other unbeaten, Boston University, on Wednesday. Depending on the outcome of Wednesday’s games, a victory would catapult Army into second place, and a possible tie for first, in the Patriot League standings.
