Dear Friends,
The competition schedule kicked back into high gear with nearly all of our winter teams in action, including the first gymnastics competition of the season.
The men’s basketball team continued their hot streak, winning both its games at Lehigh and Navy. Zach Spiker’s team has won five in a row, seven of eight and is 4-0 in Patriot League play for the first time in program history. The victory at Alumni Hall was the third straight in Annapolis, a program first since a five-game streak in the 1960s and 1970s. The victory improved our overall record against the Mids this season to 7-6.
Kyle Wilson earned the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honor after averaging 17.5 points per game in the two victories. His 23 points at Lehigh helped snap a five-game losing streak against the Mountain Hawks. He scored all 12 of his points versus Navy in the second half, including nine of the team’s last 10 points in the 60-55 win.
The wrestling team also picked up two key conference victories, winning two of their three matches at the Boston Duals. Joe Heskett’s team defeated Harvard and Brown, losing only to the host Boston University Terriers. Brian Harvey won all three of his matches at 174 pounds.
It’s another busy week ahead as the rifle team gets back into competition and the men’s tennis team begins their spring schedule. Sunday’s men’s basketball game against Bucknell is set for a 3 p.m. tip and will be broadcast live by CBS Sports Network. Fans are encouraged to arrive at West Point early to avoid potential traffic caused by the basketball crowd coupled with a concert at Eisenhower Hall.
We also had some football news this week as Jeff Monken begins to fill out his coaching staff. Current assistants Todd Spencer and Tucker Waugh will remain on the staff, while Lamont Seward, Mitch Ware, Brent Davis and Sean Saturnio come to West Point from their previous posts at Georgia Southern.
Staying on the gridiron, check out firstie wide receiver Patrick Laird’s online updates from the East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, Fla. Patrick is the 28th Army player to participate in the game. He is chronicling his experience on the web at goARMYsports.com.
