Dear Friends,
We hope you had a great Labor Day and were able to take advantage of the three-day weekend. Despite the holiday, our teams were hard at work this past week, and the results reflected that effort.
After months of anticipation, the football team made its 2013 debut with a 28-12 win over Morgan State on Friday night at Michie Stadium. Quarterback Angel Santiago showed why he earned his first start since 2011 with 120 rushing yards and three touchdowns to go along with 101 passing yards and a score. Even with some young players and veterans playing new positions, the team played a penalty free and turnover free game for the first time since the 2010 bowl victory. Maintaining that type of discipline will go a long way to having a successful season in 2013.
Angel earned a College Football Performance Award Quarterback of the Week honorable mention, while free safety Geoffery Bacon was named the Football Bowl Subdivision Independent Defensive Player of the Week. Geoffery made a career-high 16 tackles in his first start at free safety after playing linebacker his first two seasons.
The men's soccer team is off to a 2-0 start after shutout wins over VMI and Manhattan, both at home. Plebe Nick Williams made an impressive debut, scoring two goals in the win against the Keydets. He was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for his efforts. Goalkeeper Winston Boldt earned both shutouts, the fifth and sixth of his career. Both Nick and Winston earned Patriot League awards as well. They were named the Rookie of the Week and Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively.
The women's soccer team is off to a 2-2 start under first-year head coach Marcia McDermott. This past week, the team split a pair of games. After a 2-0 loss at Seton Hall, the squad turned the tables on Massachusetts, earning a 2-0 win on Sunday. Firsties Molly McGuigan and Kim An scored goals, while plebe GK Jordan Cassalia recorded her second shutout of the young season.
The Army Volleyball team tallied its first win of the season against Marist, 3-1, Wednesday night at Gillis Field House. While the Hudson Valley rival came out strong in the first set, the Black Knights came back to sweep the final three sets.
It's another busy week on tap as the golf and cross country teams open their fall schedules this weekend. Everyone else is on the road this week, including the football team, which faces Ball State at noon on Saturday. The game can be viewed live on ESPN3.
We were also pleased to announce this past week the release of an updated mobile application for all Black Knights fans. The app is compatible with iOS and Android devices and offers access to live content, full GameTracker sport coverage as well as upgraded notifications. The new sport-specific Twitter feeds and a redesigned game center will allow users faster access to updated news and information throughout the entire 2013-14 school year. The mobile app is available free for download in the App Store and Google Play Market. Audio/video can also be purchased access from within the app.
As a reminder, tickets are on sale now for the remaining four home football games. 3-game mini plans are also available. Click below to purchase or call the Army Ticket Office at 1-877-TIX-ARMY.
