SYRACUSE, N.Y. - It had been a month since the Army women's tennis team suffered a loss - a stretch that included eight wins - until Syracuse blanked the Black Knights in a rare midweek match at Drumlins Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon. Playing its first dual match on the road, Army came up on the wrong end of a 7-0 score to mark the first time the team has been swept in the regular season since last year's spring opener at Boston University.
Syracuse now holds a 10-2 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to 1999. The Black Knights, who opened Patriot League play with a trio of wins last weekend, resume conference play this Friday, March 29, at Colgate.
Suffering its first loss since falling 6-1 to Cornell on Feb. 23, the Black Knights were swept in doubles and dropped all six singles matches in straight sets. The Orange extended their win streak to three matches and improve to 7-1 at home this season.
Among those singles losses, rookie Gabriella Spindler snapped her team-best six-match win streak. Junior Della Taylor and freshman Haley O'Connor saw their respective four-match win streaks come to an end as well.
Looking to rebound at Colgate on Friday, part of the team will also stay back to take on Manhattan at home. The dual match is set for a 3 p.m. start at Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
