LINCOLN, Neb. - Junior Richard Calvin was medalist in air rifle and classmate Michael Matthews tied for second-place honors in smallbore as fifth-ranked Army swept both disciplines en route to a 4645-4631 defeat of No. 8 Nebraska in the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) regular-season finale for both on Saturday.
The win clinched third-place in the GARC standings as the Black Knights (8-3) posted a 4-2 conference mark.
Army went one-two in air rifle with Calvin's 590 besting the field followed closely by freshman Alyssa Gestl's 587, which is just two points shy of her career high. Matthews contributed a 583 and classmate Joseph Todaro fired a 579 as Army combined for a team score of 2339 in outshooting the Huskers by six points.
Matthews led the way in smallbore with a 581, just two points behind medalist Kate Woltersdorf of Nebraska (9-6, 3-3 GARC), in tying with Husker Kalsey Hansen for second place. Todaro (576), senior captain William Mengon (575) and junior Jacob Costa (574) finished a point apart rounding out Army's four-man team that fired a 2306 in outpointing Nebraska's 2298 by eight points.
"We are still looking for big numbers in smallbore like we had last year," said Army coach Ron Wigger. "We had a couple of key scores today in air rifle as we clinched third-place in our conference."
Army closes out its regular-season slate next Saturday (Feb. 16) hosting USP and SUNY-Maritime in the NCAA Qualifier on Senior Day for Mengon and Chris Malachosky at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center as the Black Knights look to clinch their 10th straight NCAA berth.
