This Week In Army Athletics

Feb. 7, 2013
Dear Friends,
The rifle team takes top billing this week with its victory over Navy. The win marked the team's fourth straight Star and seventh in the last eight years. Michael Matthews and Richard Calvin led the team, winning the individual titles in smallbore and air rifle, respectively.
Once again, a plethora of plebes stepped to the forefront. Rookie gymnast Jesse Glenn won the all-around title at the 22nd Annual West Point Open. He is the first Black Knight to win the all-around in the event's history. The victory led to Jesse's selection as the ECAC Gymnast of the Week. Staying with the gymnastics team, firstie Garrek Hojan-Clark was victorious on the pommel horse at the West Point Open and earned Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honors.
For the second straight week, both basketball teams had cadets win the Patriot League Rookie of the Week Award, and both selections were ones for the record book. On the women's side, Kelsey Minato won the honor for the fourth straight week and seventh time this season. Her total number of selections ties the Academy record set by Cara Enright and Lisa Russell, and is just one shy of matching the Patriot League record. Kelsey averaged 11.0 points per game for the week.
Kyle Toth earned the honor on the men's side. While it was his first certificate, the honor made Patriot League history. Army is now the first school to have three different rookies win the award in consecutive weeks (Dylan Cox, Kyle Wilson). Kyle scored in double figures both games, including a 20-point effort against Lehigh.
In the pool, plebe Nick Treiberg broke the Army rookie record in the 50 free and finished among the top five in four other events at the Bucknell Invitational. Harrison McCormick made his collegiate debut on the tennis court, winning both his singles and doubles contests against No. 56 Arkansas and Oral Roberts.
It's hard to believe with the winter weather in the forecast, but the spring season begins this weekend. The lacrosse team opens its 96th season of play on Saturday at 12th-ranked Massachusetts. Joe Alberici's squad makes its home debut next Wednesday versus Manhattan. Face-off is at 3 p.m.
The softball team also starts its season this week. The squad will play four games at a tournament hosted by Auburn University. The season starts on Friday versus Furman. The team will also play Kent State, Austin Peay and East Tennessee State.
The baseball season starts the following week, but a lot of attention has been focused on the New York Yankees' visit to West Point on March 30. We are finalizing the details of the event, and will have all the ticket information available on-line at www.goARMYsports.com in the coming days.
