Dec. 11, 2013
Dear Friends,
We hope everyone has enjoyed the last couple of weeks and were able to spend time with friends and family over Thanksgiving celebrating all we have to be grateful for this holiday season. This week is one of the most anticipated on our calendar with the annual football showdown versus Navy looming on Saturday.
The women’s basketball team has plenty to celebrate after its seventh consecutive win. Dave Magarity’s squad scored a 68-56 win at Yale, forcing 20 turnovers. Kelsey Minato scored a career-high 26 points and was rewarded with both the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week and the Patriot League Player of the Week awards. It is the second straight season the team has had a winning streak of at least seven games.
We also received more good news on the Academic front. Men’s soccer goalkeeper Winston Boldt, the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team. Winston is just the fifth Army player to earn Academic All-America accolades. Majoring in Portuguese, Winston claims a 3.66 cumulative grade point average.
The football team had two representatives on the Academic All-America teams. Running back Terry Baggett was named to the Capital One Academic All-America First Team, while firstie linebacker Thomas Holloway was a second-team selection. It is the second time in the last three years we have had multiple players earn Academic All-America status.
Terry, a Chemical Engineering major with a 3.44 cumulative grade point average, leads the team with 1,072 rushing yards. He has eight rushing touchdowns and enters Saturday’s game among the national leaders in rushing yards, yards per game (97.5) and yards per carry (8.2).
Thomas, one of our three captains, has a 3.65 GPA while majoring in International and Comparative Legal Studies. He will join the Military Intelligence branch of the U.S. Army after graduation. Despite missing four games with injuries, he leads the team with 59 tackles. He has totaled 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one interception and one fumble recovery.
The track team opened its 2013-14 indoor schedule with the Crowell Open. A pair of plebes made an immediate impact as Army competitors captured both the men’s and women’s Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors. Jose Santana finished the 60-meter dash in a time of 6.87 seconds, the second-fastest time in Academy history and an IC4A qualifying mark. He also qualified for the IC4A meet with a time of 22.14 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Cori Lemere placed second in the 60-meter dash and captured the long jump title. Her jump of 5.44 meters ranks No. 1 in the Patriot League thus far.
We are also pleased to have unveiled the online version of Mission First: Profiles in Army Athletics. The full book, which contains the inspirational stories of several outstanding people who represent the West Point idea of Duty, Honor, Country, can be viewed at www.goarmysports.com/ot/mission-first.html. Each individual story is also being released as a separate feature on the web site.
