Dear Friends,
It is awards season for our fall programs, and our teams have definitely had to make some room in the trophy case.
The men’s soccer team just completed its best regular season since 1993 and was well represented on the Patriot League honors list, including two major awards. Winston Boldt captured the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year honor, while Tanner Vosvick was tabbed the Patriot League Rookie of the Year. Boldt also earned first-team All-Patriot League honors. He was joined by second-team selections Vosvicka and Justin Kim, along with third-team honorees Sean Mogan and Cameron Niccum.
There were also numerous academic honors handed out this week. Firstie fullback Hayden Tippett is representing the football team as a finalist for a national award. Hayden is one of 12 finalists for the 2013 Wuerffel Trophy, a national award that honors the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with outstanding academic and athletic achievement.
Tippett was also one of four football players chosen to the Academic All-District I Team. The quartet, which also included Terry Baggett, Thomas Holloway and Joe Drummond, is now eligible for Academic All-America honors. Hayden has a 3.95 GPA in Information Technology, while Terry boasts a 3.44 grade-point average in Chemical Engineering. Holloway and Drummond own 3.65 and 3.71 GPAs, respectively. Thomas is majoring in International & Comparative Legal Studies, while Joe is an Economics major.
The cross country team also brought academic honors back to West Point. Kendall Ward was selected as the Patriot League Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He finished fourth at the Patriot League Championship meet and has posted a 3.959 grade point average while majoring in Economics. Kendall was joined by Ricardo Galindo on the men’s Academic All-Patriot League Team, while Madison Hill earned academic all-league honors on the women’s side.
The wrestling team posted the most noteworthy athletic success of the week. Firstie Ryan Tompkins won the 184-pound bracket at the Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational. He was one of 11 Black Knights to finish in the top six as the team took third in the six-team event. The team also scored a dual-match victory over Stevens Tech earlier in the week.
We get another chance to make a postseason run this week when the second-seeded men’s soccer team begins its quest for a Patriot League title in Friday night’s conference semifinals. The team will face the highest-remaining seed among the four teams competing in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. The semifinals and finals are being played at Navy.
The basketball teams both make their home debut this week as well. The women welcome Fairleigh Dickinson on Thursday night at 7 p.m., while the men open their home slate 24 hours later versus NJIT. Zach Spiker’s team went 1-1 at the All-Military Classic. Yearling Kyle Wilson averaged 15.0 points per game, including 20 in the win over The Citadel, and was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week.
Season and individual game tickets for both the men’s and women’s seasons are on sale now. The Army men will play 14 games on their home court, including five nonconference matchups, while six of the women’s 15 home tilts will be against non-Patriot League foes.
